Anchor Rode storage

I am in the process of replacing my primary anchor rode to a larger and longer line/chain combination. Presently my anchor rode is coiled in the bottom of my anchor locker (Sabre 34), along with a second anchor.

Why haven't sailors developed an anchor rode spool to wind the anchor rode around to save space while also having the rode immediately run out when needed? Am I missing something logical or practical?

I am considering making two anchor rode spools, one for my new primary anchor rode, and a second for the secondary (old) anchor rode. My thinking is that I should be able to store both in the anchor locker and have either available for immediate use if needed.

Any thoughts would be appreciated,

Resolve

Re: Anchor Rode storage

I cruised for years on my C&C 36 carried 2 anchors on the bow roller had a second roller made to attach to the original . Had a Fortress on one and a 25CQR on the other .The rode locker opened on deck I had 100ft of chain on the CQR and 200 ft 5/8 Sampson yacht braid. The Fortress had 35ft chain and 250 ft Yacht braid. I put the rode for the CQR in first and the Fortress rode in second. I used the Fortress as my primary anchor. They never tangled and I anchored a lot.

So are you talking about something like this:

MarineStore.com - Ankarolina Flat Anchor Rope

I don't have one but methinks it exists (and is a decent idea)

Re: Anchor Rode storage

I upgraded to 8-plait anchor line. It doesn't twist and just lays down flat in the locker.

Re: Anchor Rode storage

Spools would just add a big hassle to handling the anchor. But they are often used to carry spare line.

Re: Anchor Rode storage

At a boat show recently, I talked to the guy who was selling those spools. They're sharp looking, but don't seem very practical unless you have a lot of space and a locker that opens from the deck. Many people, he said, mount them on the stanchions. Wouldn't be my first choice though.
