Anchor roller part identify?

Does anybody know what this white teflon roller is called and maybe where a replacement can be purchased?

It covers a long bolt and I guess it sorta guides the anchor??

I can't seem to locate this part, basically cause I don't know what to even look for....lol

Dunno what it's called but it's basic job is to stop the shank from bouncing around at sea.

Could be a piece of thick-walled PVC pipe. Or it could be Delrin tube if so you can get such things from McMaster-Carr or Online Metals

Looks to me like it is an addition probably done by the previous owner, as Boatie suggested to prevent the anchor moving too much. There appears to be wear on one side, turning it around will extend its life and when replacing just try to find a piece of pvc piping or conduit the right size, cut to length and voila.

Since at least as early as 1983, the usual name has been "keeper pin" for two functions: 1. hold the shank of the anchor in its stowage position; and 2. preventing the anchor rode from being dislodged from the anchor roller if the bow pitches low.

I'm unfamiliar with local variations in English and the equivalents in other languages.

Just guessing at your size requirements.

Re: Anchor roller part identify?

as the rear end of the anchor shank passes the bowroller when weighing, the angle of the chain to the gypsy is changing. If the windlass has a vertical axis the chain tends to jump off. this "roller" will prevent it.

I vote this....

We did a similar fix on a relies boat for the same reason, prior to that someone had to stand at the bow when recovering the anchor and step on the chain as the anchor was coming over the roller, we used SS rod tapped either end and fitted similar to the pic in the OP's post.

But it could just as easily be as boatman61 said.

Re: Anchor roller part identify?

I can't see that it would be necessary as a guide for the road when raising the anchor. I vote for a keeper to prevent the anchor shank from moving about while at sail. It looks like an easy piece to make with the right size bolt and some pvc to fit over it to help the chain to roll through. You could check with the manufacturer and pay about ten times what it would cost if you bought a similar stainless bolt at a hardware store.

Re: Anchor roller part identify?

I'll bet that is a plastic tube over a bolt to keep the anchor chain and the end of the anchor shank down to not stress the fairing over the hawse hole where the chain goes below the deck.

Definitely looks like a PO modification.

An anchor "retainer" would be a bolt or pin that goes through the anchor shank and the bow roller's sides, to keep the anchor from falling forward and off the boat.

Re: Anchor roller part identify?

It isnt a keeper pin - I can see you already have one through the anchor at the bow roller.

I think the reason it is there is to protect the front of your GRP anchor locker lid from the anchor chain, if raising your anchor with the lid closed. Assuming you have a power windlass, as the chain to anchor shackle first comes over the bow roller, the weight of the anchor will momentarily keep the anchor down meaning that the anchor chain itself will suddenly rise a good way up into the air until the pull on the chain overcomes the weight of the anchor, when the chain & anchor shank will drop back to the deck.
If that roller wasnt there, your locker lid would be vulnerable to damage from the anchor chain as all that happened. That roller will keep the chain down & off your locker lid. The bolt through the roller will need to be strong enough to take that strain & the teflon just stops the chain links catching on that bolt. You could probably replace the teflon with a bit of hosepipe over the bolt, now & then.

Re: Anchor roller part identify?

That isnt theory by the way, that is exactly what happens on my boat - except I have a below deck chain locker not a locker lid so I dont need that roller.

Re: Anchor roller part identify?

I don't think there is any question about it's purpose. I doubt PVC would last long. Check the "phone book" for a plastics distributor they might even have some dunnage at that length for free?

Re: Anchor roller part identify?

Might try a piece of PEX tubing from the hardware store (that might be what you already have). Less brittle that PVC. It’ll wear gradually of course, but you can get a lifetime supply for about 5 bucks and just replace whenever it starts looking ugly.
