Re: Anchor upgrade

I went from a 15kg Delta to a 20kg Rocna Vulcan on my 40 footer 2 years ago. Last year I spent a couple of months in the Aegean with the Meltemi almost constantly blowing and had many days and nights at anchor in 30-55knots and it held no problem.

On a 33 footer 20kg almost sounds like overkill.

I agree with this! We use a 60 lb Manson (they don't use kg ratings) on our boat,,, 46 feet, around 12 tonnes cruising displacement with full tanks. We cruise full time, and are at anchor >95% of the time. We've found this size anchor satisfactory for the ~10 years we've used it. Oh... 10 mm chain.

Not that it would hurt anything, but the 60 lb Manson or 20 kg Rocna are more than you will need.

I am leaning towards the Manson 20kg unless anyone thinks the Rocna 15kg will do the job for me.... I appreciate there is still no guarantees and have met a few yachts who say their Rocna let them down but only occasionally !
Have 5 years on our Rocna anchored in pretty severe locations with strong, reversing currents and have yet to drag, +1000 nights.

Re: Anchor upgrade

Mmm dilema.... I dont wish the expense of changing the 70m of 8mm chain.... so general consensus seems to be 15kg Rocna on my 33ft Westerly ?

Re: Anchor upgrade

Never-ending discussion of what's the best anchor. Here's a YouTube video that compares several different types of the modern designs. My first choice would be the Mantis followed by the Spade. Also I'm a firm believer in getting the biggest anchor you can handle for your main anchor. 50 knots may seem like a lot but I can't tell you how many times it's been well over that in the middle of the night!https://youtu.be/l59f-OjWoq0 when sitting to two anchors( one eighty degrees apart) I don't think you can beat the Fortress.

Cant remember seeing anyone selling Manson near Lefkas but think I've seen Rocnas outside CYS in Lefkas.

Greek pricing will probably make UK postage seem reasonable.

You will probably find that most chandleries can supply them, they'll just order from Athens.

I bought a dinghy from the UK and the dealer shipped it to Corfu for around £100 so maybe the shipping won't be so bad if you buy from a company that sells a lot of gear into Europe. They will have good rates with a courier company.

Re: Anchor upgrade

What I have read, so do he only have an 8 mm chain. He hade not himself said that it’s a G40, so probably it’s not. Then will the question be, how big anchor does that chain hold for?

Re: Anchor upgrade

I bought a new Bugel knockoff in Marmaris at Yatmarin about 10 years ago. They were selling them for $2/lb, and I bought a 25 kg for my 45 ft boat. Not quite as good as a Manta/Rocna/Manson/Spade, but much better than my Bruce. Don't know if they are still available there, but the price was certainly right!

Re: Anchor upgrade

I usually post these links during these kind of discussions.

Your boat, your choice.

Why NEW GEN Anchors are Better:

Anchors & TEST Results of New Generation Anchors EXCELLENT & Important

Anchor System Sizing Tables (Reply #6) & Why Swivels are a bad idea Ground Tackle & Anchor System Sizing TABLES & Swivels

Steve’s Anchoring 101

The Rocna. All 20kg of it with 100ft of chain. The rest of the world can debate all they like. When I pull into a place like Bodega Bay at midnight and the fog is so thick I can't see the jetty 50 feet away to make an entrance, I drop my hook in the rolling ocean swells with the surf crashing (Foster says it's like staying in a cheap Best Western beside the highway), and I sleep. And in the morning I have a windlass to pull the beast up and I wouldn't trade it for anything. (I also wouldn't add more chain - this works perfectly in 25 to 30 feet of water - you let all the chain out and you tie off nylon at the preferred scope and don't bother with snubbers and chain hooks and all that stuff...)

You seem to see it differently, but yeah, I'm sure!

And your right :-) I just purchased (2 months ago) a 60lb supreme and if the 60 on the side is Kg's them I'm alot stronger than I feel.

Re: Anchor upgrade

In the YM tests, the Plastimo Kobra 2 came out in the top 2 at about 50% the price of Rocna or Manson. We swapped to the Kobra when our boat was in charter and got great feedback. We anchor a lot and it does the job well. The heavily weighted tip means it digs in quickly, usually leaving just 50% of the shank exposed. We have the 16kg on our 38ft cat, so should be ample for your 33ft mono. Not bad for about £100 when we bought it
