FWIW,

It appears to me that ferritic SSs, such as 316, have higher tensile strength than mild steel.
Stainless Steel - Mechanical Properties

Stainless Steel Material Property Data: Dave Wright Welding - Specialty metals welding & fabrication

Spade in their website says they use high tensile steels. What does that mean?? Heat treated mild steel?

. . .

Quick search for strength of SS welds didn't turn anything up. Anybody??

. . .

I see on the Spade website that the Spade is now offered in SS. I didn't know that. Oh boy. Bling bling.

Steel, aluminum, and SS. http://www.spade-anchor.co.uk/sd_range1.htm Is anybody else offering an anchor in all three materials. I'm impressed.

Any more opinions or experience on the Ultra anchor. Saw it again at the boat show">Annapolis boat show. They do a pretty convincing sales pitch along the lines of an "improved Spade". I really like the Spade so this seems worth considering.

"It appears to me that ferritic SSs, such as 316, have higher tensile strength than mild steel." 316 is Austenitic not ferritic. Ferritic SS rusts pretty readily...but some alloys are heat treatable for high strength. 300 Series SS strengthens readily from work hardening... so depending on the mill shape and process, it can be 35ksi yield strength or up to maybe 70ksi..... not sure on the upper end. 300 series are not heat treatable for strength. In an anchor I'm sure the only part that might need any kind of higher strength would be the shank.... to keep it from bending..
Steels come in differnt strengths depending on the alloying constituents and mill process. From plain old mild steel to higher strengths without heat treatment. Of course there are heat treated alloys too which get remarkable strengths.

I will be replacing my 35# CQR with either the Ultra Anchor or Rocna in the 40kg size.

Does anyone have a Rocna on a bluewater? Does it fit the pulpit opening? Don't want to buy one to find out it does not fit, and I don't know what the profile of the rocna is compared to the cqr.

The rocna would be my choice right now but if it does not fit then I know that the Ultra will but at a cost...

Rocna has full size printable pdf files of all their anchors on line. You can print them and build a template out of cardboard to check fit prior to purchase.

Great Idea !

I have been on the Rocna.com site for almost an hour and cannot find these prints. Can you point me in the right direction.

It's amazing: all scale drawings have been removed from Rocna website, may be to prevent making unauthorized copies.

I don't know if I'm permitted to send you the file that I downloaded a while ago to make the pattern for my boat... I suggest that you e-mail Rocna to request the information that you need.

You might have seen an Ultra installed on my Passport 615 RENOVATIO at the Annapolis boat show. I havn't had a chance to see it since I'm halfway around the world currently. I did purchase a ROCNA and it did not fit. My Delta (secondary) fit but might rattle a bit in rough weather. Will need to fix that. Suggested the Ultra. Liked what I saw and thought it was worth a try. Owner of Passport Yachts and a couple other new Passport owners purchased too. Was told if fit perfectly. Hope it works as well as it looks. Seriously though, I was depressed that the ROCNA didn't fit.

Re: Anyone Using an 'Ultra' Anchor?

OK, I am not sure if commenting on an old link works. I met a German cruiser in Subic (Philippines) and he had a locally manufactured spade. He said that the German inventor put the plans into the public domain. Ronca has an intellectual copyright disclaimer on their download - so does anyone know there the public domain plans are so I can get a spade anchor made here without infringing Ronca?
