Re: Anyone Using an 'Ultra' Anchor?

We anchor in weeds so thick you can almost walk on them . This is 90% of what we find here in lake Ontario this time of year.
I have tried to force the set through this stuff numerous times and came up with that huge weed ball you speak of . No fun , and a lot of work to clear . I have found the best way with this anchor is to drop it , lay out at least 7 or 8 time the chain to depth and then let the boat settle back. The anchor seems to works its way down through the weeds and get into the mud below. Slowly but surely. I have backed down on the anchor in the morning to find that it is in the mud below the weeds and holding .

Don't get any rock bottoms around here , and Im not saying my technique is for everyone or every anchor and combination of boat , but it has worked well for us .

As I mentioned , I set an anchor watch on my gps .

Diving on the hook is useless , the water is not clear enough to see 5 feet most of the time .

Regards

Re: Anyone Using an 'Ultra' Anchor?

We deal with weed in much the same way. First we try to set, if that doesn't work and we bring up the weed ball, then we drop with extra scope, lite set then let the wind do the work. Usually within 12 hours we're dug in enough, but I never trust it to go ashore for a lengthy amount of time if windy unless I can pull back at 1800-2000 revs.
