Aren't You Clever!

For whatever reason your anchor light stopped working.

Maybe the bulb burned out. Maybe the wires got corroded. Rather than fixing it you went to the lawn and garden center at your local home store and got one those nifty solar powered garden walkway lights to use as an anchor light.

Aren't you clever!

...you mind goes into a spin of possibilities, and before you know it, you've gone out and purchased 3 more, along with a stick of red lipstick and some green translucent plastic garden 'wrap'...

All the derelict boats downriver from my marina use them.

They are OK for a few months. After that, they only light for a few hours after dark.

Re: Aren't You Clever!

In addition to the mast head anchor light, we use the "garden" solar lights attached to our bow and stern rails. We're hoping the power boaters that don't look up will see them.

Typically these solar lights only have a 300 mAh battery, so they don't last all night. The fix for this is to replace them w/1500-2000 mAh batteries and they will last all night (given sufficient daylight).

Re: Aren't You Clever!

My personal opinion is that masthead anchor lights are ridiculous. Down here, Panga drivers never look up, just ahead. It's better to have a light hung 10ft. or so above the cabin top where it is easier to see. Besides that going aloft to replace a bulb seems rather ridiculous.
Lawn light though???...I always shake my head at night when I see a red light, a green light and 3 or 4 rather dim white lights.

It's I'm very clever! I have blue led lights running along both sides of the boat . I can find my boat even after drinking ashore and if you somehow mistake my lights for a star or a shore light I was doomed!

Usually have the masthead light on, plus the led light above the BBQ pit that lights up the cockpit.

Re: Aren't You Clever!

I have three Luci lights kicking around the boat. If I'm in an anchorage that part of or near a "thruway" I'll hang one on the forestay and one under the bimini. They last all night on a full charge.

They are awesome for pretty much everything. If I need to work in a really tight area like my anchor locker or wherever, I'll just throw one in there and get to it. At $14 a pop they are an amazing deal.
