Best Windscoop?

I have the Davis version and... well to not disparage them too bad; I don't like it.

What are people using? How about listing pros and cons?

Re: Best Windscoop?

We had a Breeze Booster for the forward cabin hatch. It's free standing--no halyard or line required to hold it up, and it can be rotated any direction to catch the wind if you're in a slip. And you can break it down from inside if it starts raining.

Re: Best Windscoop?

I don't use them any more. I've tried a couple of different designs. But the bottom line is, it starts raining in the middle of the night, and you can't get the darn thing out of the way fast enough in the dark to get the hatch closed.

My next project is a sun shade that also covers the the open hatch. This supposedly would solve the midnight rain squall problem. But wait, I've tried sun shades. They're a pain in the neck with the wind pipes up in the middle of the night...

Re: Best Windscoop?

When we cruised the Caribbean, we'd have rain squalls come through, usually at 3 am. So I retired the Breeze Booster and had a custom tarp made out of Sunbrella that fit over the forward hatch and the hatch in the head. It would force the breeze down the hatches as well as a windscoop, while keeping out the rain.

Re: Best Windscoop?

We use the windscoop and just fasten it to the outside of the hatch so I can reach up at 0300 and close the hatch without disturbing the scoop.

Re: Best Windscoop?

We have tried several types over the years. Finally became convinced that the wind scoops keep as much air out as they help to divert inside. The tarp/canvas cover stretched tightly and placed low over the hatch seems the best idea to help air in and keep rain out. The shade awnings are too high to prevent rain blowing in, but the low piece of canvas should work. Now if we could just figure out a way to tie those down on our boat without hindering walking around on the deck. Would hate to have to rush forward to deal with an anchor problem in pouring rain and trip over lines holding up hatch coverings.
