Campbell Anchor Chain...Yay or Nay

After lots of research, I can find no solid conclusion on whether or not Campbell brand chain is a good choice for anchor rode. I've read all the threads, and the general consensus seems to be "buy American," but all conversations tend to point to Acco with no mention of Campbell (made in America, owned by Apex Tool Group, apparently). We're looking at the 5/16" High Test, grade 43, Hot Galvanized. I can get this Campbell chain at the local Lowe's for $2.68/ft, which seems too cheap, and the sticker on the bucket says "Farm and Ag Use," which scares me a bit as well.

Any experience on the quality of galvanizing, the thickness of galvanizing compared to, say, Acco, or actual experience with Campbell chain?

Thanks

I can appreciate finding it necessary to save money when you can. I came across 200ft. of 3/8" BBB for $1 a foot. Galvanizing showed little use and yes...it was ACCO.

Practical sailor tested Campbell and acco side by side as a mooring chain for two years. I cannot remember the results, but if you are a subscriber you can check the archives online.

Re: Campbell Anchor Chain...Yay or Nay

All I know is to stay away from the Chinese chain. I guess that's a real no-brainer though, based on all the other fine products we get from them. A surveyor friend of mine had that chain and when he pulled the anchor, noticed something odd of the chain over the gypsy...a link broken at the weld!
The tension of the chain on the boat was the only thing preventing it from falling loose and losing his boat. That sold me on ACCO.

Campbell make numerous types/grades of welded chain, each designed to differing purposes. Their chain is high quality, generally equivalent to Acco. I'd doubt that there should be significant price savings, over an equivalent Acco product.

Campbell makes high quality chain. However, what you are finding in the hardware store is unlikely to fit your windlass. If you do not have a windlass, then it will be fine.

We use only galvanized chain made in the USA.

Re: Campbell Anchor Chain...Yay or Nay

I bought a 60' length (Campbell) of 5/16 from home depot a couple of years ago. It was rusting in four days and after a season's use, it was done. I now have a chain made in the mid west that has been under water since and is like new... if that helps any.
