Can you help me identify this chain?

I am having trouble finding out what chain I have. I took measurements and it looks like this:
  • Link width outside: 4.3cm (1.69 in)
  • Link height outside: 3cm (1.18 in)
  • Diameter: 9mm (.35 in)
  • Link height inside: 1.2cm (0.47 in)
  • Link width inside 2.5cm (1in)

Can you identify it? None of the measurements seem to match anything in catalogs or on websites. If you can point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Re: Can you help me identify this chain?

It "appears" the closest match to be 5/16" BBB Chain.
5/16 BBB outside length: 1.69". Your chain: 1.69"
5/16 BBB inside length: 1.0". Your chain: 1.0"
5/16 BBB outside width: 1.19". Your chain: 1.18"
5/16 BBB inside width: .5". Your chain: .47"
5/16 BBB thickness: .343". Your chain: .35"

Re: Can you help me identify this chain?

You are indeed correct, 5/16" does equate to .3125 inches or 7.9375mm. The measurements provided reflect a thickness of the chain as 9mm and that is .354 inches. 1st Chain Supply lists their 5/16 inch BBB chain thickness as .343 inches (not .3125 inches). Not exact so that is why I said "appears" the closest match to be...

Re: Can you help me identify this chain?

Lower strength chain like 30 proof often has no markings. You could compare to 30 proof, bbb and g4 to see if you get a match.

Any part numbers or markings on the gypsy? Any receipt in the boat from the chain purchase?

Re: Can you help me identify this chain?

I went through this about 6 months ago and got very good advice here but I will be darned if I can find the thread again. One of the best tables that was posted was based on measuring the overall length of 11 links. The wire size didnt seem to make a very definitive indentification but the length of the 11 links did. I later found a number on the gypsy that confirmed what the chart had told me. Maybe the more tech minded folks here can find and link to that thread. Good Luck. ____Grant

Re: Can you help me identify this chain?

Thank you for all of your replies!

a boat next to me just got an order of a new chain, and it seems to be matching my chain exactly, and fits my gipsy. It is an ACCO G4

Per Foot AC40502
Half-Drum AC40502H
Full-Drum AC40502F
Chain Size 5 /16"
Working Load 3900 lbs.
Weight Per 100' 116 lbs.
Full Drum Length 550'
Drum Weight 636 lbs.
Link Length 1.03"
Link Width 0.48"

my gipsy does not have any markings. @ gjordan where exactly did you find the markings on the gipsy?

@ leftbrainstuff no and no

Re: Can you help me identify this chain?

Glad you solved it. The 1st Chain Supply website has the measurements and, the BBB appeared to be a closer match than G4. However, sometimes "used" chain does not measure exactly to the manufacturer specs. I was hoping that your measurements might be tweaked enough to have G4 work. It is stronger than BBB. In my opinion ACCO chain is top quality and 1st Chain Supply has excellent pricing and often free shipping to a marina or business to off load. Defender often has better per foot pricing but when one adds shipping 1st Chain price is often better. Where ever you get your chain, make sure you feel comfortable with the manufacturer and where it is made. Good luck.

Steve

Re: Can you help me identify this chain?

masterov, my Windlass is an Ideal, and after reading through some of the materiel on their site , it said the gypsy will have a number on it. I cleaned grease and old paint and found a big number 2 on it which is the code for 5/16 high test. I have forgotten for now what markings were on the chain, but I could not identify it from the number on the chain. I am glad to hear that you have it sorted out. ____Grant.
