Concrete wedge or sleeve anchors

I need to attach several 15" s-cleats to cement pilings. There are many cement anchors with hex NUTs (the rightmost) available, but the bolt/rod will stick out above the nut during tightening and it will damage the lines.

I need the 316SS hex BOLT anchor 1/2" x 7" or 8" long (the leftmost). I searched the Internet extensively and was not able to find any. Not in West Maine, Defender, or local hardware store either. My other cleats were installed using them so they exist.

Does anyone know where to buy them?

How about drilling and using anchor cement with a bolt?

Hi there. Hilti is one of several manufacturers that make both styles. The sleeve type anchor selection can be found here

https://www.hilti.com/c/CLS_FASTENER...L_ANCHORS_7135

with what I would imagine would be the one you select here

https://www.hilti.com/c/CLS_FASTENER...ORS_7135/r2508

You might consider installing the sleeve with epoxy (place epoxy in hole and then install using the wedge function) as the epoxy will keep water from ingressing into the hole and corroding the anchor or freezing and spalling the concrete.

Re: Concrete wedge or sleeve anchors

Why are you going so deep? I think you're going to find that a wedge anchor (exposed thread end) will hold more than a sleeve anchor (Hex head bolt). You should be considering a combination of reasonable embedment (pullout strength) and shear as your loads are likely to be at and angle and not normal (perpendicular). You can get increased strengths with a 3/4" x 6" wedge but will pay mightily for a drill bit to work with that, at some point you will exceed the strength of your dock line.

Re: Concrete wedge or sleeve anchors

The wedge bolt is the better choice. Or epoxy in threaded rod. Then cut the threads off. This is far more practical and stronger than the bolt approach, which is why that is what everyone stocks.

After a hurricane it’s interesting to see aluminum S cleats broken rather than pulled out. Love aluminum but not cast cleats. In both big box hardware stores, you can find epoxy in a two cartridge pack which has a static mixer built into the delivery tube. Contractors set all sorts of stuff into concrete so I guess it would work. You can then use stainless bolts or all thread rod.k

Re: Concrete wedge or sleeve anchors

SS flat head bolts with wedge concrete anchors. Use galv. steel cleats.
