use wire. Buy a small spool of Monel wire, easier to bend and unbend and virtually corrosion proof. I have a tiny spool I've had about 20 years. Good investment for a few bucks! a good marine store will have it. It doesn't need to b e heavy gauge

Re: Consensus on "How" to Stop the Pin Coming Out of the Anchor Shackle?

Years ago I had a new nylon zip tie fail on a mooring. I don't know whether it chafed through or I just put it on inside out, but my boat was on the beach just the same. Since then I have gone back to stainless wire (sigh).

I have never had a galvanized / collared shackle open on me. But I do lock the SS ones.

Except that I undo and redo them pretty often so I actuaaly can see if anything goes astray.

Monel for long term seizing. Two zip ties for temporary seizing.

While I certainly admire Monel for many applications, I've never had s/s safety wire fail from corrosion in all the years and thousands of anchorings that we've experienced. Not sure that the cost of Monel is justified for this application.

And for actually anchoring, nylon zip ties simply don't cut it for me... far too easily snagged and broken when engaging the bottom with all its nasty sharp bits.
