To lower the center of gravity close to the tip, lead is added inside the tip, but the spade is not welded shut over the lead. The lead is exposed to sea water causing electrolysis between lead and steel.
Because of this, or possibly because they are not properly galvanized in the fist place, SPADE anchors rust fast.

I wanted to re-galvanize my spade anchor.
To prevent the lead from melting away and getting lost in the molten zinc , I had my anchor welded shut.
The galvanizer informed me that my anchor had floated on the molten zinc bath !
Apparently the manufacturer of the anchor did not put enough lead in the tip.
This may explain why my SPADE anchor fails to set into grassy bottoms.

The shank is hollow to keep the center of gravity close to the tip. As a result the shank is not strong enough and I bent it by hoisting the anchor while it was stuck amid rocks.

All this is shoking from such an expensive anchor.

My next anchor will be a ROCNA
Spade warranties rust, and bent shank in all their anchors except the aluminum. Contact them before modifying in any way.

You must not really care very much about that catamaran

I am currently using a Ultra 35kg SS, with an Ultra swivel shackle plus 85+/- meters of SS-316 Italian chain So far after three years I still swear by it. If I was to change I would buy the next size up.
Oh how we relate to that! In the Caribbean we still see a few even on private vessels. We do keep an eye on them if they anchor up wind.

I saw one on a commercial ferry in Virgin Gorda two years ago. About 74#, way too small. It dragged all over North Sound.

I was considering adding a GPS alarm to IPHONE but we put the cat back in the garage instead.

I contacted Spade and they told me they have a refinishing kit to restore the new look. I'll be interested to see how well it turns out.

"The Rocna has drug..." (in a prior early post)

Perhaps if your Rocna anchor got off the drugs it would be more effective.

Yes SPADE dealers sell a "special paint " to cope with rusting SPADE anchors.
but at a price, and it is just a paint.
At any rate, their offer just confirms that SPADE anchors do rust abnormally !

What is the value of warranty allegedly offered by the manufacturer for rusting SPADE anchors and bent shanks, when your boat is far away in Guatemala or the Pacific ?

Good point. What is the value of any warranty when you boat is far away? I had an expensive Mastervolt combination inverter/charger to fail after 13 months with a 2 year warranty. To their credit, Mastervolt replaced it for free, but it cost me almost $500 to ship it back to the USA for inspection and to ship the new one to me. Plus installation.

The warranty is even more worthless when it's on labor. Once you have sailed away, they know you aren't going to sail back hundreds of miles to argue with them about poor quality of work.

Drug is a dialectal variant used by cruisers all the time.

My 7 yeAr old Manson Supreme isn’t rusting and it’s been in the water a LOT. But that doesn’t mean much as the backing for the name sticker still hasn’t come off. That sounds. Impressive!

Our 2 year old one is rusting on the edges but it gets used continuously.
Near new chain is well worn after two years as well.
