Yes, it's probably just you.

As a former commercial halibut longliner, we used tens of miles of three-strand ground line to haul tens of thousands of pounds of fish from depths of 300-600 feet in 20-30 foot waves. That line was our bread and butter. That line chaffed. We cut out bad spots and short-spliced the ends together--daily. With practice, the process takes 1-2 minutes, max. I have never seen a short splice fail.
