Re: Dimensions of chain?

Yes, I realize that fitting the gypsy is the only thing that actually matters. I just missed a good length of 5/16 chain yesterday. It sold before I called. I think I will carry a foot or 2 of the chain that fits and my calipers whenever I go to look at new or used chain. I dont think I need to carry the gypsy. On my limited budget I will probably buy used and not buy without actually comparing. Thanks to all of the folks that have helped here. Got to Love CF. _____Grant.

Re: Dimensions of chain?

After all of my confusion and lots of good advice (Thank you guys) I ran across a chart on the Ideal web site and it said the gypsies are numbered. A few minute drive and a little emory cloth and magic, a big number 2. The chart shows that as a 5/16 high test gypsy. I started another thread about it, but the Ideal Windlass CO. was sold about a month ago. The old phone number is still good. I hope the new company keeps up the almost bullet proof standards that Ideals are known for. _____Grant.

Re: Dimensions of chain?

I have Campbell 3/8 inch bbb on my windlass, but it is only 7 ft long.
So I want to change.
Campbell only gave me two measurements 1. 3/32 inch pitch I assume,
And inner diameter of 5/8inch. Campbell no longer manufacturer it.
When I measured the existing chain I measurements were very close.
I took mm distances and for pitch was over 27 and the 11 link was 308mm.
Outer width was 36mm
Inner Id was 16mm
Bbb chain dimensions from Acco and Titan are the same ie 28 mm, 36 mm wide and 308 mm.
Hoping to get stronger chain
Titan g40 dinn has 28 mm and 36mm outer. Same as William Hackett, but none in North America.
Others have outer dim of 34mm.
Now not sure if this 2mm in width will be an issue with the Gypsy
Any thoughts, I still can’t find anyone to sell samples.

Based on my research and testing samples in my gypsy the most important spec will be links per foot which is set by the inside length of the links.

My windlass is completely happy with 3/8" BBB or 5/16 G4/HT chain which have almost identical number of links/ft.
