Diy bow roller

Hi

I知 Christof. I知 going to replace my bow roller.
Yes i知 g to weld it myself, and no I don稚 want to buy an assembled one.
Does anybody have an idea for a spade type anchor? Some experiences?

I own a Gulfstar 41 sailboat.

Thanks

Re: Diy bow roller

There's not much variety in bow roller design. Spades fit on most bow rollers. Not sure what you're asking specifically.

You池e right. The question is vage. I知 asking at people who have a spade or rocna type anchor for some advice on which bow roller suits them the best for that anchor.
Some experience or examples... I知 going to weld one together myself

I hope my question is clear now?

Re: Diy bow roller

^^What different bow roller designs are you contemplating? if you have no bowsprit, it's just a channel with a roller at the end. If you have a bowsprit, you can incorporate the roller into the side of the sprit, but a Rocna-type anchor with a roll bar will bump the bowsprit. A Spade, lacking the roll bar, will not.

Re: Diy bow roller

I made a to scale drawing of my proposed set up. Then got scale views of vArious anchors (Spade, Rocna, Mantus) and laid them on to make sure they fit.

Lots of little details depending upon your bow configuration and size of anchor.

I built my own bow roller. (I cut the stainless and tacked it together than had a good welder finish it).

I put two rollers on it, separated by about 4" for two anchors. I made sure that it extended far enough forward so that there was enough room for the anchor to come up and the stock could swing back and the anchor would turn the corner.

I made sure that the anchors I wanted to use could come all the way back and become tight. I put holes in the roller structure to insert a pin that locked the anchor. Separate for the two sides.

Some people have built a hinged double roller mechanism for one anchor which rocks back and helps the windlass to pull the anchor over the roller.

Make the roller structure itself long (for and aft) to increase the strength. My roller extends about 8 inches forward of the stem and about 18" back from the bow along the foredeck to where the bolts go in. I also built a lot of support to prevent twisting, since the roller is off the centerline and big sideways forces are common.
