Dumb question on storing anchor

I am sure there is an obvious simple answer to this question, but I just cannot think about it...

I am usually storing my anchor in the locker at the bow when sailing (if the anchor is left on the roller, because of the shape of the bow and the location of the tack with respect to the roller on my boat, the spinnaker tends to snatch on it).

I have not been able to find a way to secure the anchor in the locker with a line to prevent the anchor from bouncing around in high seas and potentially making damages.

I then thought of simply wrapping the anchor in something that would at least protect the locker in the event that the anchor bounces around.

The question is what to use to wrap the anchor in. I tried bubble wrap, but it is kind of awkward and gets yucky very quickly. I tried canvas-like fabric, which is easy to handle, but it gets moldy in the locker... Then what?

I just cannot think of something appropriate... Neoprene fabric?... What do people use, if anything?

Thank you!

That all sounds rather cumbersome, and the anchor would likely damage whatever wrap you used the same as it damages the hard locker surfaces. I'd work more on a solution that allows you to keep the anchor on the bow roller.

Re: Dumb question on storing anchor

I would probably try to come up with some kind of cover for the anchor when it's on the bow roller, that reduces or eliminates the chance that the spinnaker would snag on it.

Re: Dumb question on storing anchor

Would a Sunbrella or heavy canvas bag with a drawstring around the anchor stop the snagging of the spinnaker on it? The most utile place for the anchor is on the roller, no?

Re: Dumb question on storing anchor

If it will go in the locker great, stick some ordinary rubber car mats in the locker and dump some chain on top to hold it down, then go sailing.

Re: Dumb question on storing anchor

Do not wrap the anchor. Protect the inside of the anchor locker with thick rubber sheet.

Yoga mat from Walmart.

Re: Dumb question on storing anchor

On the roller or in the locker the anchor is better to be well secured in place so it can't bounce anymore. Set a robust holder for your anchor in the locker..

Re: Dumb question on storing anchor

You can drop a big piece of old matres foam on top of it, then force the hatch down and bolt it up.

A piece of closed cell foam is even better as it does not saturate.

Cheers,

Re: Dumb question on storing anchor

Your anchor locker should have a drain. These often become plugged, so check it. If it's open you shouldn't have that much of a problem with growth.

Old wetsuit material can make good padding. Boat fenders are made of a very tough resilient plastic, cheap if salvaged from a dumpster.

If it's a Danforth pattern anchor put rubber tips on the cross bar ends. That should solve any problem with the anchor doing damage to the locker.

Re: Dumb question on storing anchor

Thank you for all the replies.

Actually, car mats, yoga mats, or old fenders may very well be the "very simple answer" that I could not think about Perhaps I can pull something together in the exact shape of the locker... it may work, I'll certainly look into those!

As for doing a cover for the anchor on the roller so the spinnaker does not snatch on it, it may be a more difficult option. As it is, the spinnaker even snatches on the roller itself, so I made a neoprene cover for just the roller to avoid that!

Re: Dumb question on storing anchor

A boat anchor is not a convenience just to enable a quiet lunch - it is also part of a boat's emergency equipment. Burying it in a locker would prevent rapid deployment in critical situations.
I'd strongly suggest solutions that keep it in the roller, ready for quick deployment.

Re: Dumb question on storing anchor

If possible line a wall or 2 with a piece of 1/4’ or3/8 ply and bungee the anchor, probably the shaft , to a wall, get 2ss eyes for the bungee hooks, maybe 2 bungees
