Also, I'm astonished at how low the loads are. Maybe I need thinner anchor rope.
I wouldn’t underside the line portion of the rode, long term deterioration is less obvious than chain, there’s minimal weigh penalty to staying with larger line and it provides some longer resistance to short term chafe.

The rule of thumb I see for line is that it is double the size of the chain.

Indeed.

Re: Expected load on anchor rode

Wsmurdock. For this load measurement, What are the anchoring specs for your boat? Length, beam, type, chain, chain length, rope size and length, amount of windage?

We could compare your measuremenfs to the calculators.

Re: Expected load on anchor rode

Irish Eyes is a Pacific Seacraft 34 cutter: 34 ft length, 10 ft beam, 5 ft draft. The chain is 5/16 BBB. There was around 75 ft out with 25 ft of 1/2 in snubber on the chain and a total length of 70 ft. The high tide water depth was 2.8 m, and it is about 3 ft to my bow roller. The genoa was rolled, the staysail was bagged, the main was covered, the overhead hatches were closed. I have 4-5 gal jugs on deck, a bimini, and a dodger.

I was playing with my riding sail, putting it up and taking it down to see the effect on the variability in apparent wind angle and anchor load. Chris Parker's forecast was NE20-27G35, but disappointingly we did not see that much wind. Our location 200 yds off the beach at Hetty's Land on Great Guana Cay in the Exumas was well protected in NE wind with nearby hills to 22 and 16 m.

The variability in anchor load, the low wind speed, the small range in apparent wind angle, and my inability to record the anchor load defeated my attempts.
