Experience with Maggi AQUA G4 chain?

Looking at replacing our chain with this. Its G4 and 10mm and will fit our windlass. Its also 1/2 the price of G7 and Im fine with the working load rating of 1250kg. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the stuff. Sourcing from Budget marine here in the Caribbean. Price is good just dont want the stuff to rust to hell in 6 months... Thanks for any actual experiences.

We do not have Maggi, but we have another Italian chain. The coat was very fine and it started rusting very early. One could foretell this from the price too ...

I hope Maggi is better quality.

You CAN actually judge the coat by the eye. Have a good long look at various qualities and you will see where there is a fat cruiser friendly coat on the metal.

Had 10mm Maggi G4 chain for 11 years. Turned it end for end once. Even then only had small patina of rust. I changed it out for G7 and it is showing rust after one year. I think the G7 has a different galvanization process. Its much lumpier, like American chain. The g4 was smooth and hard.

Is it my imagination or do higher tensile strength chains rust faster than the lower strength stuff????? Assume the carbon content goes up as strength progresses from BBB to G70. Just from limited experience seems the harder the steel. The more corrosion prone it is.

I'am using Maggi 12mm chain, since 3 years no rust on 300 feets...
This chain is hot galvanized.

This is absolutely true. In general (not purely true from what I understand), the higher tensile strength the steel, the harder it is in general to hot dip galvanize and the poorer the resulting galvanizing. This is due to the alloy materials in higher strength steel not allowing the zinc to wet the metal out as well.

Wow thats great to hear! We are in the BVI and I bought a 2' length of the chain. Have it hanging off the dock in the water for almost a month now. Was planning to see what it looks like after a month in the sea compared to new and then decide but your post has me optimisitc. I would be happy to get 3-5 years out of chain here in the caribbean at $4.65/ft.
