Re: Fabricate spade anchor

I’m sure in practice there would be few legal actions brought against someone making an item purely for personal use. But the law (and all the legal beagles I could find online) makes it clear that it is not legal.[/QUOTE]

If the dimensions are different, There is no copy right or Patent infringement even if it does looks the same,

Been there, Done that, I was very dissapointed to find that out,
But it did save me a lot of money knowing it,

That looks like a recipe for galvanic corrosion.

Yes, as long as it is sufficiently different (this is how lawyers make lots of money … by fighting over how different something must be). This is why I suggested to the OP to make an anchor inspired by Spade, or even better, one inspired by all new-gen anchors.

Like I said, I’m all for DIY solutions. But as someone who has made his living off his own IP (copyright), and as someone who has become fairly well versed in IP law in general, I am perhaps overly-sensitive to people suggesting they can just copy someone else’s work.

So, Goodonya

Any plans available?
The only anchor it makes sense to knockoff "at home" is the Bugel. Fabrication is simple and easy.

With other anchors the design is much more complex than it looks with lots of trial and error going into success. Factors like tip pressure and weight are not trivial.

Two patents and countless copyrights later, I'm with Mike. If you feel like you need to copy either the idea or the details, then the idea must have intrinsic value. Coming up with ideas is hard work, just like any other work.

The chain cant get entangled no matter which way its rolled over,

One problem I did have was getting the point to weigh more,
I widened the hoop up about an inch, So the point went from 10 lb to 35 Lb,
The more you can get on the point, the better it bites in,
I had to make up a new bow roller to fit it on, The original was too small for it,
Have a look at Panope's Video's on anchors, They are very informative,

Cheers, Brian,

EXCELLENT!!!

This is just not true. First thing most patents don't include dimensions. If there was a patent for a steam engine do you think building it at 3/4 scale gets you around the patent? It doesnt.

Read the law (and past posts). Simply not true.

In practice I bet few cases are brought against purely personal uses. But that doesn't make it legal, or even right.

Copyright has fair use exceptions. Patents don't.
They are very different animals and offer very different types of protection.

From Forbes:

A patent is a sword, not a shield. It gives you the right to attack a competitor who makes commercial use of ("infringes") your patented technology. Contrary to common belief, it does not give you the right to practice your technology free of interference.

Correct. I didn't suggest they were...?

There are some exceptions, or exemptions in US patent law as well. Whether the op's plans would fall under one is unclear to me. The point I'm making (or countering) is this common belief that it's ok to take someone's IP as long as you't don't sell it. It's ok under specific cases, as spelled out in the laws exceptions or exemptions.

Yep, I was agreeing with you.

Anyway the IP discussion is probably getting a ways OT.
