Re: Fortress anchor no chain? Just rope rode?

The short chain does two things. 1. It protects the lower end of the rode from chaff on the bottom. 2. It works better than a swivel to let the rode wind and unwind under stress.

I know the new miracle anchors are purported to hold any boat in any weather on any seabed at any location.
That said, I do believe in "horses for courses", and every little nook and cranny here on the Ca. and Oregon coast where I've dropped the hook I've never felt that the 35H wouldn't do the job.
Maine? Carribean? Tahiti?, don't know, never been there, perhaps if I did I would want a few of the high-tech jobs to sleep good.
Disclaimer, have not been at anchor with a storm bearing down.

Re: Fortress anchor no chain? Just rope rode?

I remember when Fortress recommended a length of cable for chafe and then rope. The thinking is that it is superior to chain to slice into the bottom allowing the anchor to penetrate better. Makes sense.

Re: Fortress anchor no chain? Just rope rode?

Had it as a respectable anchor on a 35', never used, even more useless....and I sold it. The shape/weight combination is essential and I would never give up my 10mm chain
