Re: Goiot 312 Windlass issues and maintenance

As a welder and a TIG guy I'll share the method. It needs to be clean. I can reach down into a very deep hole to get a solid fuse onto any broken fastener. You build it up with filler rod and perhaps weld a nut or vise grips to the issue. Just spins out with no external thread damage. The concentrated heat expands the stud then contracts when cools breaking any bond. I always try this method first before damaging a threaded hole.
Beating or drilling on it is plan B.
Find a good local welder, he knows how this works.

Re: Goiot 312 Windlass issues and maintenance

Next challenge:

In the photo is the pin for the main shaft (believe it or not, lol).
The parts listing calls for a "goupille acier 8x45" which I understand is meaning steel pin, 8mm by 45mm, not sure if it is supposed to mean stainless steel though, bloody french..

Here is the question:
as this 8mm diameter pin largely takes the weight of the anchor and any pull, and any shock loads exerted to it by an incompetent operator, would it be an ok ish idea to replace the pin with a similar size HSS (High Speed Steel) drill bit, cut to correct length??

That would be just the "base" section of the bit, not including the "threaded" section.. So the pin would look like a pin, not a screw..

It just so happens one of my 8,2mm HSS bit would be good n tite.

I reckon HSS is less tolerant to shock loads than SS but SS is not the best in this respect in the first place and I don't know if this pin was designed to operate as a safety shear pin in a similar way like a shear pin is in an outboard propeller? Or did they use SS just to minimize corrosion?

If I can cut one of my HSS steel bits to 45mm length it would be a perfect match.

What I'm a bit concerned about is the tensile strength.. Is that the correct term? Would HSS fracture like china porcelain cup?

its pretty much a given I won't find 316 here, 304 maybe.

Good or bad idea?

Met my car mechanic's chief mechanic and asked; HSS is absolutely NOT suitable and would shear very easily. Then got lucky and found a 304 SS matching pin, price about 30 cents US
