Re: Help I bent my anchor pin on the roller

I've never thought that is what the "pin" is for. I believe it is a misuse. The only proper use of the pin is to prevent the rode from jumping out in pitching conditions. They are generally in too awkward a position for regular use.

I secure the anchor with tension on the chain (chain lock). If there is too much motion, a lashing and possibly a slotted wooden block (very effective!), but these are removed before apraoching harbor. An anchor mush be ready to run, and a bowsprit pin or lashing fail that test.

Chain lock pins can bend too, jamming the anchor drop at the worst time. I went to using tempered steel (modified screwdriver). It may rust eventually, but at least it won't bend, it will snap cleanly. Nice handle too.

I do understand that lashing the anchor in the roller would have benefits. I just can't help wondering what you guys do if you need that anchor in a hurry? Search for a knife?
rule#9 always carry a knife. It will save your life.

He kinna walked into that one...
So far (35 years) I've never needed one in an emergency. That would be poor planning. But it's still handy.
