We've seen the same thing in the San Juans.
OTOH, once we saw an old old old ferro having touble anchoring in a large but full anchorage.
The family aboard had no clue how to anchor, and were repeatedly being chased off by lots of other (mostly power) boats.
They were trying to make a CQR hold in less than 2:1 scope.
I finally went over in the dink and asked them if they wanted any suggestions.
They immediately said, "YES PLEASE". I helped them pick out a spot where they wouldn't be bothered by anyone and talked them through the process.
They were very grateful to be properly set, and thanked me for the education.

In fact, I was able to help another couple in the very same anchorage when they we’re having trouble getting a hook to hold. I do try to assist those who need it, and who are able to be assisted. And I appreciate it when others extend assistance to me. Sadly we do see the occasional kmacdonald-types around, but they are pretty rare. Most cruisers and boaters are respectful, generous and fun folk. It’s why I love to spend lots of time in one place, getting to know people.

Do you go over and remove the 100kg of weed from the anchor of powerboats after their fifth attempt? Nooooo, I didn't think so.

Do you hang out at boat ramps on Saturday morning offering to help? I'll bet not- you sit there and laugh. Think of the children!

Hmmm, I don’t hang out at boat ramps looking at children … sounds a bit creepy .

As for the weed thing; I’ve never had to deal with weeds like I find in the Bay of Quinte or the 1000 Islands. Last season I struggled to remove the masses of weeds each time we hauled up just using my boat hook. Eventually I had a neighbour boater show me his solution; a hand garden rake lashed to his hook. Worked much better.

Since then I’ve ‘paid it forward’ every time I see a fellow boater doing the weed-removing dance.

I used to sit on the flybridge a watch people burn up their rear tires trying to pull boats up a steep slippery ramp. In fact, a lot of us did at the marina. It was great fun if not a little smokey. I can still remember the smell of burnt rubber.

I'd like to have a few bears with him next to the boat ramp.

Mike, Mike, Mike.......

To rid your anchor of a weed ball, simply release the clutch on your windlass and let it free-fall 10-15 feet or so. Problem solved. The weed ball will come loose usually when the anchor hits the water.

Do you really think that will work?

Silly old me never thought of trying that....

For Mike... serrated bread knife on the end of a boat hook is best for kelp. You can see mine in the first pic.

So you see, guys, a whole lot depends on where you are. By the way, Cabo de Hornos, means Cape Horn.

And we have our very own anchorage wonkers down there... often of the larger 'chartering' classes .... who will be first into the anchorage... lace themselves up like a spider and deny any later arrivals safe access...

We have ways to deal with them..........

Kmacdonald... isn't your first name really 'Dick' ....
