To rid your anchor of a weed ball, simply release the clutch on your windlass and let it free-fall 10-15 feet or so. Problem solved. The weed ball will come loose usually when the anchor hits the water.

For Mike... serrated bread knife on the end of a boat hook is best for kelp. You can see mine in the first pic.
It works great, we do it all the time with our Ultra anchor which doesn't have a roll bar. One very good reason NOT to have a Rocna.

Re: How Close Is Too Close?

Thanks Ken, but it wouldn’t work for around here. The weeds get wrapped around the chain almost like they’re woven in. As you haul in they all get compressed at the anchor. And the drop off our bow is only perhaps 4’ from where the bottom of the swinging anchor. We’re usually anchored in less than 15’.

I’ve thought about the knife EP. Some people use it around here. Seems problematic for someone as unstable as me (on my feet … not mentally, I think ). I find with the claw I can pull the bail of weeds away from the chain at water level fairly easily.

… Man, I miss Lake Superior’s cold, clear water. Nothing grows up there .

Have you ever anchored in kelp areas, like E.P's pictures show, or perhaps northern BC or Alaska? The stuff does not come off after a blow without serious manual intervention. And my anchor does not have a roll bar.

Yeah, that way you do not need to practice thinking even if something goes wrong.

Knives, serrated or not, are a significant consideration unless your rode is all chain. But then so are weed burners.

I prefer to do my thinking with actual data.
