Re: How good is the Rocna?

I put the boat in reverse a bit as the Rocna comes up. It orients the anchor properly and clears most of the mud off. No swivel and no boat hook needed.

Re: How good is the Rocna?

I use a Kong swivel. I attach to shank with d shackle therefore no side load. Anchor comes up correctly. Ideally a little chain between shackle and shank is probably best.

This seems to be a clever plan. I don't regularly have a problem with the position of my rising anchor, but I often reverse away from my lifted anchor. I often anchor in less than 10' and motoring over the cloud of lifted debris can damage my impeller with the coarse grit in the water.

Maybe I'm unwittingly benefiting from your plan!

Re: How good is the Rocna?

I just swivel my rocna by grabbing the rollbar with a boathook.

Especially convenient because I've used the boathook to vigorously wiggle the chain the whole time as I bring it up with foot button operated windlass. A technique I never see anyone else use, but works to get ALL chesapeake bay mud off of chain so I don't have to sit there with deckwash hose and aim, etc. Then when anchor is just below surface, I grab rollbar with boat hook and swing it back out of water (don't try with plumb bow) and let it drop back in. Twice with this and all mud is off anchor. Then push/pull the anchor into correct position with boathook as I raise it.

Easy.

Re: How good is the Rocna?

I simply rotate the chain to get the anchor in the right position. I think most windlass can't do this.

What is an anchor straightener? Pix?

Dave

Anchor straighteners - send them a message. Grants forgotten more about anchors, chains and ropes that I'll ever know. :-)

Wow! That's a new one on me. Diabolically clever. And the Sheila on the anchor, Wow!

I think that means that it will be even harder to stow than the Rocna. According to numerous accounts, it works somewhat better than the Rocna under most conditions, but not dramatically so.
I would venture the numerous accounts are ancedotal at best because unless same boat used both anchors in similar situatuons with no bias their comments are at best speculation.

Ive been doing the same trick for years. It works very well. Often better than a washdown.

Thanks I'll give this a go in future.

To everyone else that answered re this particular question, thanks

My trick at the moment is to use the boat hook. But it's an inconvenience and if the weather is not nice then I can take some time doing this. Especially on my own.

Why doesn't anyone support the 50/50 reality?

Sure, there are ways to change it, but all of them require seeing what it is you've, excuse me, "Come up with...."

And the Rocna SUCKS, I only have had it for a decade and it pulls me off the bow when it sets.

I'm going back to my CQR, at least it didn't pull the rode out of my hands, and I was perfectly happy furrowing my way through anchorages.

Oh, wait!!! I never even bothered with a CQR because I realized that without a windlass, why would I bother with needing an anchor that as tie as heavy as what I needed? :w ink:

The CHANCE of your anchor coming up right way or "wrong" way is 50/50.

Is this what you are asking about?

50/50 is better odds than a casino, aren't they?

Ok, I get the feeling you don't like the Rocna

Mine rarely comes up around the right way. I'd be lucky if it's 1 in 10

Re: How good is the Rocna?

An Ultra anchor with an Ultra swivel solves all of the problems mentioned on this thread. Life is too short to be wasting time messing around with your anchor.

We've owned an oversized Rocna in the past which worked just fine except when it became clogged with weed and kelp at times.
