Re: If you could choose only one anchor for cruising round the world?

Primary anchor is a Genuine CQR 50lb that they don't make anymore. Believe actual weight is 22.5 kg. Fifth boat this anchor has been on in 55+yrs. Was on first sailboat I owned as a storm anchor. Lot of anchor for 28' boat.

Have never had it drag using correct technique for anchoring..

You are right. Maybe think of it as "what would be your primary anchor"?

Re: If you could choose only one anchor for cruising round the world?

I agree it's a bogus question, because in some circumstances I'd consider a Fortress as a primary, but in others I'd go for the Sarca or the Manson.

Purely speculation at this point, however, as I use a Fortress, a hi-tensile Danforth, an original Bruce and a CQR (not all on the boat at the same time!) in Lake Ontario, with a disassembled yachtsman in the forepeak as a charm.

But looking forward, I like the Manson and the Sarca ... in theory. In fact, the Fortress is working out well as a primary, but I could see it doing less well in a tidal or otherwise reversing situation. It's certainly easier to handle on a boat with mixed chain and rope rode and no windlass. On our steel boat, we'll have more comprehensive ground tackle handling gear.

It's a French anchor made by Mondial Plaisance Industrie MPI - Mondial Plaisance Industrie and quite popular in Europe. A modified plough.

Thanks for the link. I have seen one on power boat next to me in Levkas and didn’t know what it was.

Five anchors onboard but only ever used one. 20Kg rocna has never failed to deliver.

Re: If You Could Choose Only One Anchor for Cruising Round the World

Of the 40-to-50-foot boats (power and sail) at my dock, the far most common anchors on the bow (primary anchors) are plow, plow & plow, plow & Bruce, or Bruce. Plow (CQR) anchors (pivot at the end of shank) number 2-to-1 over all other anchors combined. I've got a Bruce-like on the bow and Fortress in the stern lazarette.

Five anchors? Are you a collector?

thought it was just the delta mud where it wouldnt hold until I headed south.. the Free anchorage in San Diego.. 20 feet of water, 150 feet of chain out and dragged the anchor all over the anchorage and never did get it to set.. same thing in Cat harbor.. the rocna dosent set in soft bottoms.. the FORTRESS did set and held solid..
Not knocking the rocna, but different anchors are needed to set in different areas...
If I were to pick ONE, it would be a CQR.

Not ballast but just ended up that way. Cqr which the rocna replaced fits the double roller so 2 anchors are always ready to go, never liked it but seems a shame to get rid of it as it fits nicely. Then a spare delta, fisherman in a locker and lightweight fortress easy to dinghy out from the stern. Didn't think 5 was over the top on a cruising boat. You never know when they might save yer boat. Or someone else's.
Though 15k miles atlantic circuit the rocna has never given slightest cause for concern.
Which is more than can be said of the cqr it replaced.
