Re: Is a 125 Pound Anchor Too Big for a 50' Cat ?

I have a 55Kg (121lb) on my 47 foot monohull and it does not seem too big when the wind is howling in the anchoragage. My wife says its the best thing we have bought for the boat.

I seem to rember Jedi had a Maxwell 1500w and it managed his large anchor OK. Try sending him a PM or search the archives to confirm.

Thanks
That makes me feel a lot better

My wife stared with disbelief when she sighted it this afternoon
She thought the 55lb Delta that I had planned on using looked large, now sitting together side by side it looks minuscule.

Bit bigger than a 1500

Well, if you ever want to return to land - all you'll need to add is a tractor (or a horse ).

Interstingly Jedi,s windlass only has a 1200w motor
which is the same size as the motor fitted to your winch,
but as you point out the gearing and lift ratings
are different.

Re: Is a 125 Pound Anchor Too Big for a 50' Cat ?

G'Day Catman,

I think that you will be able to answer your own question the first time you are forced to anchor on way short scope in a crappy anchorage with a gale warning ringing in your ears.

It's all very well to say that an anchor of x pounds properly deployed would hold your vessel ok, but in the real world one often finds oneself in unavoidable positions where proper deployment isn't an option. I think your new hook is just fine, and I bet that you will come to agree with me.

And FWIW, my Maxwell 1200 vertical once lifted 40 feet of 10 mm + a 44 lb Bruce + a huge mooring block + some heavy primary chain. It didn't like doing it, popped the breaker a few times despite giving it rest periods, but by god it got it to the surface so that I could disengage the mess from my anchor. I reckon that yours would lift the lot of your tackle if so required.

Cheers,

Jim

Jim
Thanks Jim, it was my original thoughts as well having been in that exact position previously on a more performance orientated vessel I owned where maximum anchor size was dictated by anchor "wench" strength.

That ended up being several days of dragging anchors, continual re-setting and little sleep all with breaking reef not far enough behind us.

The "wench" made it perfectly clear this time that the only effort for anchoring was to be standing on a button, suitably fortified beverage in hand.

Thanks again, that certainly makes me feel better.
GMac did tell me that it was a pretty gutsy windlass, but back then we were talking about 80lbers, not 125lbers.
But then it is only 45lb more.

Double the weight as well
It would interesting to see where it all went as I would have thought the motor was the heavy bit as capstan/gypsy for 12mm chain would be not that much more than 10mm I would think.
