Re: Is my Rocna to big?

Your bow roller should be able to take the breaking strength of your chain without damage. By the looks of it the current roller is nowhere close to strong enough. Think about being anchored in 60 knots of wind, having the anchor wedged under rock and trying to pull it free, etc. Build a genuinely strong
roller. And the mounting to the hull must be just as strong or the roller strength is meaningless.

Re: Is my Rocna to big?

Heck no! I have a 33kg Rocna Vulcan hanging on the front of my 40ft Bav Cruiser on 60m of 8mm G70 chain.

My feeling is "go big or go home" when it comes to your primary anchor. Fit something that will hold you securely in a full on storm and you'll sleep soundly on the hook in normal conditions. Plus you don't have to faff about rigging up secondary anchors if you do get caught out by the weather gods when they roll "snake eyes".

Re: Is my Rocna to big?

Here's a roller designed for the 25kg Rocna. 3/16" still seems smaller than I'd want, but it's a good start!

KR-2025 - Kingston Anchors

Re: Is my Rocna to big?

But for now, when you attach the snubber, bring it to the chocks on the side vs over the bow roller. This prevents the 60 knt issue listed above.

Just for fun, a fellow we know, on a charter boat with a French flag, went merrily through the anchorage (in the Caribbean), with a 3kg dinghy anchor on his bow roller. Lots of people hoping desperately he didn't stop near them!
Great humor.

Re: Is my Rocna to big?

I have the 25 on my 42' GB, and would never consider anything less in weight due to its performance. I'm on 120' of bbb chain.

Re: Is my Rocna to big?

Re my previous comments about a double roller to reduce loads.
I designed this for retrieval loads primarily, since I always use a single or double snubber. Breaking strain on 3/8 g4 chain is over 16K pounds.
Please see the uploaded image here:

I use one on each side with the Rocna on starboard. The port side rollers were damaged during anchor recovery after Hurricane Matthew. My Fortress (primary) was deployed on the port side, 20 feet of 3/8 stainless cable, and 220 feet of 1" 8-braid nylon. It took 1.3 hours to recover that anchor. The steel cable cut into the rollers, the only damage sustained in 80+ mph winds. BTW, the Rocna 33 (on 220 ft of 3/8 G4 Acco chain) took 30 seconds. Go figure.

And yes, I'll be replacing the bungee before I head out again.

Re: Is my Rocna to big?

IMO there are only three situations where an anchor is too big. 1/ If it cannot be recovered if the windlass becomes unavailable. 2/ If it and the accompanying chain adversely affect the handling of the boat in a meaningful way while sailing. 3/ If the size negatively affects your decision to anchor.

Re: Is my Rocna to big?

I have a Rocna 20 kg. on our Cal 39 ( 18000 +- lbs) and have never had it drag, but have had one instance where it didn't want to set in soupy mud, and I'm happy with it but might consider moving up to a 25kg.

Several boats on our dock have the 25 kg. and it looks like the shank of the two anchor sizes is the same but the extra 5 kg. of the 25 is located in the head/fluke. So it seems to me that you will have the same roller issues with either anchor.

Better to rebuild your roller setup and stay with the one you have.

Nailed it. 70 meters of 12mm chain is WAY too much weight in the bow of a 40 foot Bene

Good God, putting 100 meters of the same in my 54' Moody was one of the worst decisions I've ever made. Visibly alters the trim even of this boat with 16 feet of beam, and having more than twice your displacement.

The anchor is fine, but as Unciv said -- ditch the chain.

The OP corrected the chain size.

Re: Is my Rocna to big?

It's way to big for the mounting and would probably be torn off at sea. Build some chocks on deck for it set in when you are out.

Re: Is my Rocna to big?

We have a Vulcan 25 on a Tayana 37. Not too big at all but needed to alter how it sits because its wide face catches a lot of water.
