Jammed windlass

I have a horizon express windlass that works with the electrics, but not with the manual veering handle. .Seems like the cone clutches have seized. Is there a quick fix, or is it a strip down job? Thanks

Re: Jammed windlass

you could try getting a blow torch on it,then squirting a bit of engine oil between the cones and the gypsy drum.
the outer cone is probably siezed on the shaft.

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Drhuid.

Do you have the manual?

Re: Jammed windlass

From the design I would say you may have some corrosion between the shaft, cones and gypsy. If you can get the gypsy off the shaft then you can punch out the cones using and aluminum rod.

If you can not get the gypsy off the shaft then you may have to soak it in a some Kroil or similar rust breaker. Then put two pry bars under the gypsy and pry it up off the shaft. The shaft and lower clutch appears to be one piece.

If the outer clutch is seized on the shaft you might try working it in and out, since you have it loosen a bit, and just keep moving it both ways and that should break it loose. If the clutches are bronze you could pour a little white vinegar & salt mix around the shaft area. That eats copper oxide.
