Lewmar V series winch gypsy

I have an older V series vertical windlass with a gypsy labelled "002" on a boat built in 1990 and that I recently purchased used. Searching through the owners manual, I note that the recommended chain is either 10mm DIN 766 or 3/8" Campbell S4. On the Lewmar website however, for the same gypsy, I find the following chain specifications: 10mm DIN 766, Campbell 3/8" S4, 5/16" G40

Has anybody had experience using 5/16" G40 chain and if yes, was performance acceptable?

The chain on the boat when we bought it appears to be 10mm or slightly larger. But I would like to increase the length (2x) and space in the anchor locker is limited. The smaller chain will take up less space, weigh less and cost less.

I would be grateful for any advice.
