Lofrans Cayman 88 stripper rebuild

Hi Folks,

Our 26 years old Lofrans Cayman 88 needs some TLC.

Please refer to the picture for some understanding:

The mounting point for the chain stripper (#335) is so corroded that it was gone a while ago. I want to reinstall one.

Any idea on how avoiding to buy a new gear box frame (#337) ?

Worst case, I will replace the whole gearbox, but I need to disassemble it.

Right now, the inner clutch cone (#277) seems stuck on the main shaft, even after I removed the key (#209). Somehow, it seems free to rotate a few degrees on the shaft around the key location, but i cannot make it slide out.

Any idea what could be wrong with this ?

Thanks

Re: Lofrans Cayman 88 stripper rebuild

Probably stuck by corrosion, possibly dirt or a metal burr. Can you get a puller on it? It looks a lot like my windlass internals, almost identical. I fought with it for a long time and it eventually fell off. I think the spring can find its way into interference with some part. It was then almost equally tough to assemble.

The case is aluminum. If the damage is to a mounting lug then a decent welder can rebuild the lug and fill voids. Not too much heat but make sure the weld has good, deep penetration. Preferred 100% to avoid future crevice corrosion.

I think you are right. Most probably there is a metal burr.
Will try to get a puller and go from there.

Just be careful of the spring and other bits. In the end, mine easily fell apart. I think the spring got between grooves in a couple of parts.

Re: Lofrans Cayman 88 stripper rebuild

I cannot insert a puller. the space between the clutch cone and and the back plate is very minimum.

I am thinking on drilling 3 holes in the flat section of the cone and insert some kind of screws so that the puller can grab it.

@Nicholson58, could you get me the distance between the stripper and the gear box body. I think I will try machine something allowing re-attaching a stripper. But I need dimension and position information.
thanks

Thanks

Re: Lofrans Cayman 88 stripper rebuild

Can’t help. Boat is in Antigua. We are in Michigan till November. Try to get a service manual.

As I mentioned, when I disassembled it the thing became totally loose but would not come off. It was flopping around on the shaft along with all of the other bits. It defied all reason. I was about to give up when the wildcat fell off. The only possibility I could figure was that a part of the coil spring found its way into an internal groove or some other feature causing the lock up. Mine is an early (old) Nilsson 3000H, not identical to yours but the assembly looks very familiar. In the schematic the coil spring does not show.

Note that Nilsson is now Maxwell

Talk to these guys and you may get lucky.

Be sure you release set screw 41, well hidden in the grease. A burr here might also stop you.
