Re: Manson Boss any users or sensible opinions?

We love our Manson Supreme. I also loved our Rocna before that. I would be interested in trying the Boss or the Vulcan if I had a pulpit where I couldn't use a rollbar anchor.

Yes, they picked a battleground that suited the fortress anchor. But I think the only real question anybody who knows how good an anchor they are was just by how much of a margin the fortress anchors would win by and if the next gens could come close on that bottom in a straight pull.

I think that test was as good and unbiased as I have seen from any manufacturer. But the point of my post was that it is one of the few tests to include the Boss anchor.

So, my rule of thumb is that the correct size of anchor, no matter the make, is one that has your neighbors in the anchorage or marina giggling at how big it is.

I am very happy with my Supreme. I have the 45 pound on my Catalina 42. She went through a 50 knot sustained with no dragging, 5 to 1 scope.

I appreciate the skepticism and also the kind words about the testing. Yes, we expected that the ability of increasing the shank / fluke angle from 32° to 45° (an exclusive & patented feature) to improve holding power in soft mud would be highlighted.

However, just like the other anchors, the Fortress also encountered setting problems in this soft mud, and in full view of the boating media who were aboard to witness the tests.

Here's a link to a page with articles, comments, results, and videos from this extensive 4 day test:

Downside is that is considerably longer than the roller setup, so I will need to cut and reweld while on the boat when on the hard which is a shame seeing as how the whole anchor roller/backing plate setup is a work of art in itself.
It is a thing of beauty, but if those are rollers and not chain stoppers, please remember to take the load off the windlass gearbox by snubbing the rode to a deck cleat once the anchor is set.

Silly question, but in good weather and short stays, I'm bad about not using a snubber, just using the locking mechanism on my VWC 1500.
Is this acceptable?

Not really, although, of course, people (including me) do it all the time. For a lunch break in a protected anchorage in flat water, you're not going to do any harm, but for an overnight stay, conditions will change while you sleep and the boat surging up and down on the rode in the waves and wind for hour after hour is the same or worse than putting years of normal stress and strain on the gearbox, often with a hard bang at the top of every wave. It's tough stuff, but you can still bend it and break it.

Re: Manson Boss any users or sensible opinions?

Hi , , I had a Boss for awhile and was unimpressed with it . It's now a garden decoration . A friend of mine had a similiar experience . Mine dragged 3 times where the Delta I had previously never dragged , same anchorages . I have a Sarca Excel now that I am very happy with . Most people round here with the Supreme are happy with them .

Hi John
All good, just behind the windlass is a 200mmx 200mm sampson post with a length of heavy nylon rope and a "Victory" chain grab look a like.

After the last decade or more that the GFC has been playing out with all the now obvious lies and BS we have been fed with all the clever marketing and happy clapping and me using the interweb for more than pron and cat videos I have now become skeptical about everything and everyone.

Now where's that tin foil so I can make a new hat.

Thanks for that and of the two Mansons, it would seem the Supreme is the right choice.

Anyone can anchor on a nice day, weight of chain alone would probably hold it then.
Its how it works in a blow that counts

80lb plough on a 60 ft 60 tonne high windage vessel sounds broken to me.

Re: Manson Boss any users or sensible opinions?

I surveyed a 35 foot cat last year Simi and it had been anchored/abandoned for a whole year in front of Hervey Bay on one of those cheap plow anchors. It was a 40lb one and as much as I dislike them it held the cat for a whole year in all weathers. Must have been good scope and sandy bottom that saved the owner.
Does your new anchor fit the bow roller? These new designs are certainly a lot more chunky than the CQR.

Cheers
