Re: Mantus Anchor on Test

Interesting. I would have liked to see a few shots of the anchor on its back to understand how it flips over.

I'm pretty surprised that you had the Manson Supreme and Danforth dragging. I'm not sure a hard dry sand beach is really indicative of much. What does it look like in the wet sand where you show your anchor at the beginning and end?

I'm not sure I'd call it a kayak anchor. Or do you intend for it to be disassembled to fit in a kayak? It also looks pretty sharp on the feet rattling around in a dinghy. Better than a Danforth, though, as it doesn't have the pinch points.

Re: Mantus Anchor on Test

More Mantus feedback. While we don't do the cruising many on this forum do, we just got back from a trip to lake Champlain, and broke in our new Mantus anchor there.

The Mantus has replaced a Fortress for our main anchor, and we're really impressed with it. I never had to set it more than once. It held without budging through thunderstorms and wind changes. I even anchored one night in a weedy shallow bay, a place I never would have attempted with our Fortress. It was just as hard to get the Mantus to release it's grip on the mud/sand under the weeds as any other place I anchored. My Fortress would just have grabbed a hunk of weeds, if I had even got it to grab at all. The Mantus seemed to bury itself under the weed growth there.

My Fortress held great, most of the time, but wind changes and weeds were not times it was at it's best. I did have it drag during wind changes a couple of times in the last 3 years I've had it. The Mantus seemed to be rock solid and consistent, no matter what we threw at it. Certainly not a thorough test of this anchor, but I slept better using it on this trip.

Re Mantus Anchor Resetting. Seeing the anchor sets (and resets) so easily, why would you bother to 'back down' to initially set the anchor?

Re: Mantus Anchor on Test

Ourh, backing down on an anchor is very important! While it is likely that if pulled out, you anchor will reset it is definitely not a given. Setting the anchor upfront will guarantee that the anchor is securely set every single time.. The less uncertainty the better.

So how does this fit with the written statement at the end of your video 'we guarantee you a set every time'?

So Ourh, What evidence of re-set would satisfy you?

I was trying to make the point that no one, including Mantus, can 'guarantee you a set every time' as they stated at the end of their video. Their reply above seems to concede this;

The Mantus has proved to be an excellent anchor. I have now used it for almost 1000 nights at anchor on two boats.

It has safely held our boat in 5 named storms including winter on the north west coast of Scotland and the eastern Med. In both these areas winter has a well deserved reputation for poor weather, but they have very different substrates (note that our Mantus, like our previous Rocna, is oversized).

Our previous anchor was an identically sized Rocna. The Rocna is also an excellent anchor but the Mantus expands on most of the virtues of this model. The only caveat is that the Mantus has a longer, more tapered fluke than the Rocna, which together with the wider overall size created by the “wings” means you need to check carefully that the Mantus will fit your bow roller. There will be cases where the Rocna will fit but an identical weight Mantus may not.

Photos of the Mantus can be seen on this thread:

Re: Mantus Anchor on Test

That's really great to hear. What size and weight is your boat? I just purchased a 50ft ferro cement ketch and its currently using a cqr which I'm not really a fan of. I think the mantus will a good anchor for me. Just trying to work out which size. Boat is probably 30t+

Re: Mantus Anchor on Test

We had a Mantus 57kg on our previous 47 foot yacht. For the new 49 foot boat we simply ordered the next size up Mantus (68kg) to retain the same ability with the increased boat size. Our old yacht had a nominal displacement of 14.5T the new boat is 17T.

The images on the Photos of Anchors Setting thread are all of the old Mantus anchor. Unfortunately the water has been too cold to photograph the new anchor. I think it will need an underwater drone to make photograping the anchor practical in these lattitudes.

With only my wife and I on board, just have to hope our windlass never fails. But I'm definitely looking at getting one of these I think. Was hoping not to have to go too heavy but based on the size of your anchor we would have to go a further size up probably.

Re: Mantus Anchor on Test

there seems to be quite a few mantus anchors in use now. I have. Not read one report involving a bolt issue. Btw. I drove over a drawbridge yesterday to get to my boat. I hope the bolts holding that structure together are okay
