Mantus Anchor Swivel safety wire

Has anyone found a valid alternative to the safety wire? I like the Mantus swivel design, but I fear that the safety wire can be chafed by a rock or something...

Re: Mantus Anchor Swivel safety wire

I've used the S1 Mantus swivel on 5/16" chain and Rocna 20kg anchor four summers on the Inside Passage, ~350-400 nights anchored so far. Re-wired the swivel twice so far - probably should do every year. Have not yet seen sufficient wear and tear on the wire to worry about.

I did however use one size larger wire than what came with it - the supplied wire at that time seemed a little small.

I think it matters how carefully you put it together. I made sure it was tight, no excess wire hanging out to be easily grabbed. Tucked the twisted ends in well too.

Excellent swivel.

Thanks! Can you please show how the cotter pin fits?

Thanks! What is the max wire diameter that can be fitted?

Here's what I used, from McMaster Carr:

Bend-and-Stay 316L Stainless Steel Wire, 0.051" Diameter, 1/4 lb Coil, 35' Long

Re: Mantus Anchor Swivel safety wire

I used two pieces of .032 aircraft safety wire, ran both pieces through twice, one piece for each side if you will.
I’ve never rewired it and never had a piece of wire broken, but they way I’ve worked it, it would take both pieces to break and even then somehow the collar would have to be unscrewed for it to come apart.

Never seen .050 wire myself, on aircraft the largest I’ve ever used was .041 and we called it coat hanger wire, was real thick and difficult to work properly.
Aircraft safety wire usually comes in .020, .032, and .040 with .032 being used majority of the time.

The bit at the end of the wire that you cut off is called the pig tail. Normally it’s wrapped in a curly que like a pig tail to keep it from cutting you, but on the Mantus swivel a very good thing to do with it is leave it a little long and stuff it back down the hole, that way it isn’t hanging out to cut you.
Safety wire can get you like a fish hook, any aircraft mechanic can testify to that.

I will be at the boat in a week and will take a picture.
Just used the biggest cotter pin that would fit and bend the ends.

This is not an alternative, but I use a heavy duty zip tie in the anchor chain link nearest the swivel collar. The this will prevent the collar from "backing off" past the swivel pin in the event of safety wire failure.

Re: Mantus Anchor Swivel safety wire

I use the Lewmar swivel - available in 2 sizes, the larger of which has the same working load as the largest Mantus swivel - 7,000 lb

No wire needed

Belt and Braces x2

Or in other words I used 4 separate wires, individually twisted and tucked neatly away then covered in a couple of layers of waterproof, self amalgamated tape.

If that doesn't hold it all together I doubt anything will. Mantus will have factored in everything when they designed the swivel, you don't build anchors like they do by chance you do it with sound engineering.

Re: Mantus Anchor Swivel safety wire

But they still get sideways tension on them and can bend open the lewmar ones

Thanks! What brand aircraft safety wire is best?

Thanks Kas! There's no such a thing like "sounding engineering", especially in the marine industry!

As Ronald Reagan used to always say to his friend Mikhail Gorbachev, "Doveryai, no proveryai": Trust, but verify!
