I have a geared hand cranked (rotary) winch. Takes 10mm chain. It is very old and labled "pioneer" I have seen a few here in OZ but dont know where they came from. To free fall you can stand on a foot powered band brake and slide the drive gear sideways.

The Bronze ABI Manual Windlass is a beautiful work of art. Of course, at about $2,500 they should be.
By comparison, the Lofrans “Royal” can be had for under $800.

I have one that sounds very like the one Cooper has.I havn't found a name on it but it is interesting in as much as it has 2 speeds, the body and the bearing housings are SSt and the shafts are bronze, the gear change is made by sliding a shaft sideways to connect to a higher / lower ratio, once in gear there is a locking mechanism that holds it there. It has a rotating handles, and a brake band that is foot operated. It came of an American cruiser many years ago as they found it was too hard to operate, once I stripped it down I found the problem to be the vertical and horizontal grease holes didn't meet so no matter how much you pumped the grease gun there was no way the grease could do its job. 30 seconds with a small drill and all was well again.
I also have 2 Goiot manual ones, a 1 speed and a 2 speed, both quality items. Though as age creeps up I am starting to look longingly at a Maxwell VR1200 or a Lofarns Tigre.

I bought an old boat with this winch (in much worse condition). Pioneer brass winch that looks and sounds amazing. Still to remount on the yacht post makeover.

It has a number "1" stamped into it on one of the pins that hold it together.

I am trying to find out where this winch came from and how old it is.

Hope the photo loads properly.

Re: Manual Anchor Windlass

Is it possible that this item was carried over or re-purposed from another industry, ie; elevator repair or mine shaft work. Just food for thought...

Re: Manual Anchor Windlass

I had a Royal on my 30' boat, never used it because it was too slow. I mean slow. They tend to seize up no matter what you do. The big allen headed bolt on top is not an oil fill, it's to hold a gear in place, don't remove it unless you dis-assemble the whole thing. There is a good article on re-building one by the boat Atom, just do a search on Google. I am going to replace mine with an electric. Then I will use it.

Re: Manual Anchor Windlass

Here's an ABI type windlass. https://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/...913637211.html

IIRC that windlass was originally made by a company out of Oregon. Their windlass looked an awfully lot like the ABI version.
