Maxwell Freedom 800 windlass problem

I bought a used Maxwell 800 from a forum member. I have lost his email so cannot contact him directly. If he doesn't get this hopefully there's someone familiar with these who will know the answer.

It was shipped to me with the 2 parts seperated. To check it, I slid the gearbox over the shaft, installed the key and spring clip and tested to ensure it all worked as it should.

I am now trying to mount the windlass. Following the instructions from the manual I have removed the spring clip and the square key but the gearbox will not slide off the end of the shaft. There is no visible reason why not. Every part of the shaft looks perfect. The gearbox moves down the shaft until the end of the inner shaft is level with the outer gearbox shaft and with a distinct clunk, it moves no more.

I include a picture of the windlass and the offending piece. Have written to Maxwell but since it's 14 years old, NLA and was bought used I'm not sure how far they will go to help. Haven't heard back yet anyway. Next step if there is no obvious solution I've missed, is to remove the top plate on the gearbox and see if the answer lies within

Re: Maxwell Freedom 800 windlass problem

Dear Mexican Hat,

If you get this would you mind sharing the solution? I’m having the exact problem. My windlass is on the boat, working fine and I’m just trying to drop the gearbox to check the oil, general condition, etc.

I removed the clip ring, unscrewed the plastic retainer nut from the top, gearbox slides down a bit then stops with inner shaft level with the outer gearbox shaft…just as you wrote. Best, Darin

Re: Maxwell Freedom 800 windlass problem

Sorry Mr Cod,

That style.of windlass would have been very hard for me.to mount so I went to a different unit. I did figure it out but it was a while back and too much time has passed for me to remember how I did it. I do have a vague memory of finding a diagram online that helped.

Good luck

Ha! As I wrote that I remember... Maxwell got back to me and were very helpful. There's nothing holding it in unless something inside has broken. All you have to do is tap the shaft gently and it should separate.
