Muir Vertical Windlass Question

Hi fellow sailors,

I have just installed a Muir VRC 1000 windlass and I am wondering how to use the manual emergency function. When I put the winch handle in and try to turn it there is no movement. The operators manual was no help. Any experience with hese?

Can't help with your question but would like to pass on that I have come accross several Muir winches that use 25mm main shafts that have been bent when trying to raise a stuck anchor rendering them useless.

Telephone +61 362 118 811; its the Muir factory. Their tech guys should be able to help you out (the factory is in Tasmania, Australia, so factor in the time difference).

Thanks for the replies. I have been to the Muir website but they do not have the manuals online and I have not found a local US support line.

I am not very familiar with the Muir windlasses but given no other answers have been posted can suggest the following.

As far as I know some models have no manual over ride. Others have one of the following (on some models you can specifiy whichever of the two methods one wants so a same model windlass may have one or the other) -

1. One uses a sheet winch handle in the recess on top of the capstan - I assume one has to release the clutch first.

2. One removes the capstan or clutch cover and fits a bar into the recess in the gypsy disclosed.

Muir Windlass Manual mode

I have a VRC 1200, and damaged the gearbox. I have been using the windlass in manual mode. The winch handle goes in the fitting on the edge of the cover, not the middle. But first, you may have to take off the cover and switch the position of the pawls inside. Your manual should tell you how.

Thomas,

Thank you for your post. I was wondering if I had to change the pawls to make the manual drive work. I saw that in the manual but it is not very well written. Some day soon when I am sitting at anchor with nothing better to do I shall take it apart and try it.

Windlass repair

I have a 20 year old Muir vertical windlass that is running intermittently. I need to remove the electric motor but I do not have a service manual. Has anyone remove one before or suggestions of where to find a parts or service manual?

Muir has made a number of horizontal windlass’ over the years. Goto the IMTRA site, and search your specific model.

Re: Muir Vertical Windlass Question

Old thread, but just to let you know, nothing has improved with these guys. Wasted about $30 worth of international phone time with Imtra. I was teaching the technician that was supposed to be helping me. I'm sure glad this piece of junk is on someone else's boat. Needed a parts list for a VR 600 gipsy only 12 vdc.
