Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

This is Delta. 5m@5:1

It looks in the first photo as if it has just been dropped without any setting force, but this was not the case.

There was a long drag mark. Unfortunately, the substrate was smooth rock with a thin layer of sand. This is a very difficult substrate, but there were a few patches along the drag mark where the sand should have been deep enough for a reasonable set.

The convex plow anchors are very poor in this sort of substrate in my opinion. They take a long time to set and so cannot take advantage of small patches where the sand gets deeper. The smaller fluke area and convex shaped blade does not generate much resistance in the thin sand layer.

Now that is a deep set Vulcan, any deeper and it would come back up with an Australia visa stamped on it

I can see 5 or 6 links of chain in the lower left side of the picture.

I really like the Vulcan on paper. Looks a lot like spade so would be great to see some testing. Panope, can you lay hands on one?

What sort of testing were you thinking of? Sure Hoppy and I can provide some personal results regarding performance and as a scientist I promise to be impartial (although I do admit to loving my 33kg Vulcan )

It's certainly the deepest set that I have seen so far. Mind you, at the previous anchorage where I anchored twice (aborted attempt to move elsewhere but returned) we had up to 45knts at times and both tracks on the GPS were black smudges. Clearly very set and as I think it was sandy, tit was probably dug in deep.

Spot on. The winds had swung around.

Still in the same spot but I'm a little concerned about how close I'm to the neighbour. They dropped their anchor when we were facing the direction at the time I took the photo. Now the wind has picked up and swung around to roughly the same direction as when I dropped. I'm a little worried they might have dragged a little after the wind change.

I will go for a swim to see how my rocky is doing and try to fine the neighbour anchor. The camera will join me.

I really liked Steve's videos with harsh reversing conditions. Really showed where the stars were at resetting- mantus, spade eg. Curious if vulcan performs comparably to spade since about 1/2 the price.

Did you buy vulcan because you couldn't fit a rollbar, or did you think it to be superior to original rocna?

Main thing that made me chose the Vulcan was the shank length for the weight. The similar weight Rollbar Rocna and Mantus simply wouldn't fit on my bow roller. The 33kg Vulcan is actually shorter in the shank than our old 16kg Delta so it fits perfectly, and as a bonus won't impede any future genaker pole either.

I wish I'd had a camera when I was using a CQR. Blessed thing always lay on it's side and unless the holding was perfect it was pretty useless. Worked fine in the Solent where there was thick cloying mud to make up for it's deficiencies. Pretty much useless in the Med with one or two notable exceptions. Now replaced with a Spade which is excellent.

Malbert, I have not had an opportunity to test a Vulcan.

No luck with the swim, the water's so murky that I could not even follow the chain.

I figured. Would be interesting to do head to head with spade eg. But no pressure. I'm so appreciative of your videos and noelex's pix. Very illuminating.

Just have had a couple of times my rocna didn't set in mud (probably upside down on rollbar) and one 180 shift where we didn't reset at all (again probably flipped or was clogged) that have me thinking of changing anchors. May go Mantus but silly as it sounds I just dislike the look of the huge rollbar even though I appreciate that it works. We are primarily in Chesapeake, but also New England with Caribbean planned in a few years.
