And a fat wallet should find an Ultra anchor (but they are best displayed on the bow in pairs). See Golden Arrow Marine ~ Ultra Marine

Sure shipping anything that heavy is going to cost a few £$€ but what price piece of mind. And Mantus have said their anchor will work without the roll bar.

I don't think I have the courage to try the mantus with no roll bar without a lot more data/videos, etc. I know that in theory it drops down right side up due to hydrodynamics, but what about in a shift? What if my anchor breaks out in that shift due to a dodgy bottom instead of walking around while set? I'd prefer an anchor which is designed to set with no roll bar.

If it doesn't need a roll bar, why does it come with one?

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I doubt anybody would go for a rollbar ancher with the rollbar removed unless seeing a video (or similar) how it recovered from laying on "its back".

Thanks for the suggestions, but I don't want to turn this excellent thread into a "what is the best anchor" thread.

There have been various brief diversions, but they just add, overall, to the stories told by the mermaid's and noelex's photos. Also, to me, it is interesting learning about the anchoring bottoms in the Med.

Thanks again, Mermaid and Noelex.

I agree. It sure would be great to get some PNW photos in here, but I sure am not going to supply them! Anybody have a small ROV I can borrow?

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

There is quite a bit of talk in relation to setting the anchor using plenty of reverse. Maybe you don't need reverse and the boats pull should be enough. I am an advocate for backing down on the pick, but what happens during a tide change (180) l don't start the motor and reset the anchor. Do you? ???

Easy choice seems to be the Spade. It's supposed to be a great anchor and will do much better than a Delta.
I purchased our Ultra anchor through the Spanish distributor Baitra.com. It cost less than the Spade.

The better anchors, if well set, in reasonable substrate, will shuffle around remaining set and buried.

With just a tide change often the force is insufficient to rotate the anchor anyway, with only the chain moving.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

On occasion we back down after a swing, either to make sure we are still set well in the new direction, or to let newcomers to the anchorage know where our anchor is. Occasionally we will be laying to the chain over or upwind of our anchor and a new arrival would drop anchor 30m behind us directly over our anchor or at least inside our swing.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

This is a 185 kg (400 lb) stainless steel plow anchor. The yacht is a 123 foot superyacht.

They dropped right next to our boat in the same patch of softer sand. The anchor set very quickly for a plow (within a couple of metres) and has rotated nice and level. The shank is not buried at all, but there is little or no heaping up of sand.

This is an excellent result. I rarely see a good result like this for a plow/CQR, but this anchor can work well in a softer substrate, which we have here.

The very large anchor size and stud link chain also create some scale effects, so the results may not be exactly transferable to our smaller anchors, but it is nice to see a plow anchor behaving well for a change.

A stainless Spade costs more than an Ultra, but a galvanized Spade is half the price (or less) than an Ultra which only comes in stainless.

If it's about money, then go for the one with the yellow paint job.

I hear the ultra is a decent anchor, but I can't imagine why I would want to pay for a stainless anchor. Galvanized anchors work just as well, and carbon steel can actually be stronger than any stainless (bis80, for example), though not all carbon steel anchors use the high tensile plate.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Yes, stainless is for the rich kids. Nice show off.

My anchor sits under the trampoline, so you cannot even see it. Not that it would have made any difference in my decision anyhow.
