Re: Pro's and Con's of storage on the hard

Might be less corrosion from being in the water, especially if you have shore power and charger.. Less wear and tear on docklines etc. You need to winterize your fresh water system for sure though. However, you cant run your engine every few weeks on the hard... I say it's a maybe a tossup. If you could store inside then a big plus!

Re: Pro's and Con's of storage on the hard

the water freezes in the bay that I am in toronto.......infact cars drive on it,
however my boat will stay in the water,......for one, my insurance company will allow it, it is cheaper than to put it on the hard for me and besides.......boats are made to be in the water not on the hard on a cradle, the strain in the mast has caused gel coat cracks, because there is no give on the cradle......I do have shorepower and I will run 2 electric heaters along with a de humidifier, so I can go down and tinker around, maybe stay overnight with an electric blanket......its kind of cool....

where I live in toronto.......you must find out from your insurance company if your covered.......many are not and you will have to pay an extra premium...........

enjoy

Re: Pro's and Con's of storage on the hard

Mine stays in all year. My situation is different from most. I look out my kitchen door at my boat, so I have it under observation every day. Make sure you have antifreeze (if fresh water cooled). keep the charger on the batteries, make darn sure all seacocks are closed. Fill the diesel tank all the way to the top.

We sail in the winter if the weather allows. lots of fun

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"
