Re: Question about anchor chain size. 10MM to inches...

If the boat had a 10mm chain on it, why mess with what worked for so many years?
Don't re-invent the wheel. Save time and money and replace the 10mm chain. It's time USA came in to the world of mass production and cost effectiveness.

Re: Question about anchor chain size. 10MM to inches...

I was in exactly the same circumstance: 26,000 boat, unknown quality 8mm chain. And 35 pound Delta anchor.
I found this setup not contributing to my good-night-sleep when at anchor, so I decided to upgrade both the chain, and the anchor.
8 mm was my only choice not only because I didn't want to change the gipsy, but because of the chain locker size either.
I measured 10 links of the chain (as it is suggested by Jimmy Green Marine site), let them know the result, which was a wee bigger then standard for 8 mm chain. They said this maybe well because of 13 years of usage, and assured me 8 mm grade 70 chain would fit well.
I was ready to buy from them, but just then I found this Italian Chandler:

Probably because the Maggi factory is in Italy, their price for the G7 chain was quite significantly lower, and I bought from them, saved a few hundred Euros. The delivery to Spain was 100 Eu
Almost forgot to mention: the new chain fits perfectly to my old windlass gipsy

Re: Question about anchor chain size. 10MM to inches...

I've found that Acco 5/16" G70 galvanized chain works fine in an Ideal 3/8" BBB wildcat. YMMV but the pitch length for the 5/16 G70 and 3/8 BBB are within a few %.

Just an option if you end up replacing the wildcat (gypsy).

Re: Question about anchor chain size. 10MM to inches...

This free site is a very good information resource for sailors covering many areas of expertise and it had great info on the different chain specs. It was put together by the gent who did much WLL & BL testing for Yachting Monthly (it also has a wealth of other useful info).

Hi

Where did you find the Gypsy? I have got the Alex 3 and can't seem to find a gypsy for it.
