Quick Anchor Windlass problems

Has anybody had problems with Quick Windlass Motors failing. Specifically on the 1500W and 1700W Vertical (Dylan) windlass.
I have had 2x motor failures in 2years.
I have also spoken to other yacht owners, and some seem to have the same problems.
Initially the motor runs slow/labours and then packs up. Replacing the motor with a new motor last approx. a year, and then the same problem re occurs.

Re: Quick Anchor Windlass problems

I have had a horizontal Quick windlass for a long time. Still runs OK.
It may matter that Sunsail specified a system by which a relay will not let the windlass work unless the alternator is charging. This will ensure the windlass will not see low voltages, wich increase current draw and kill motors. Does your boat have such a system?

Check the voltage at the motor while under full load. If you are under voltage the motor draws more amps, everything gets hot, etc. Low voltage could be caused by too small supply wiring, burnt relay contacts, connection corrosion or bad bearings in the motor or elsewhere in the winch.

Sounds to me a battery issue. Check the batteries with a volt meter while raising the anchor. If you see a dramatic drop, its the batteries. I would start there and follow the wiring for a bad connection.

Re: Quick Anchor Windlass problems

Hi Panache,

I just put a post in the catamaran, Lagoon 450 section for exactly the same problem with our Quick Dylan1700w. Did you get to the bottom of the problem please?

I have to run an engine when using the windlass so I did not think battery problem.

Thanks
Dave

Re: Quick Anchor Windlass problems

Yep. I solved the problem by fitting a 1700W LOFRANS in place of the inferior Quick windlass.
The motor on the Quick has no identification to diff between 1500W and 1700W. When i confronted Quick in Italy, they said that it is propriety information!! Bull!! I strongly suspect that they supply the same motor for both the 1500 and 1700W. Resulting in the motor being under powered.
The Lofrans 1700W is much more substantial than the Quick.
My impression is that the Quick is inferior, and that Quick does not stand by their product warranty.
Get rid of the Quick!!

Thanks for your reply. I will likely also replace. Did the Lofran fit in the holes in the yacht? I may go with Maxwell that I can buy locally.

Re: Quick Anchor Windlass problems

Good idea to replace the Quick. I fitted a Lofrans X3. The bolt holes had to be slightly adjusted. No major effort. The 1700w Lofrans is a much more substantial unit, the motor is a lot bigger than the Quick motor. I have had no problems with the Lofrans after 18 months.(By now i would have had to fit another Quick motor!) Suppose anything is better than Quick.
