Quick Antares - Can't get it to manually deploy

Hi there,

I have tried everything I can think of but I can't get it to manually deploy.

This is what the top of mine looks like.

Do you have the manual?
Page 15: “To operate manually, the clutch must be disengaged allowing the gypsy to revolve and letting the rope or chain fall into the water.”

Yup I have the manual. I am not really sure how to disengage the clutch. Is that done by pushing down the pin in the hole on the top of the rope drum?
If so I have tried that.

If the windlass is similar to my Quick Hector, you disengage the clutch by putting the handle in the center slot and turning counter-clockwise. It is re-engaged by turning clockwise. Looks like the lock lever for the chain wheel is on the base of the unit.

The Quick Manuals are not very exhaustive. On the positive side they are a quick read.

Re: Quick Antares - Can't get it to manually deploy

the hole with the pin is for the manual emergency operation, the brake is the bi-square in the center
if it still fails to loosen the gipsy: make sure the little pawl on the base is not engaged in the gipsy
if it still doesn't: take apart & grease the brake-cones

Re: Quick Antares - Can't get it to manually deploy

If releasing the clutch/brake is not allowing freefall, it is likely that the cones have seized due to corrosion. Take apart and clean. I'm not sure what grease, if any, is advisable on the cones. They are there for friction, so a lubricating grease may not be advisable... anyone know what grease, or is there another anti-corrosion coating to apply to the cones?

Re: Quick Antares - Can't get it to manually deploy

the new windlasses (I'm slaving away here for the distributor) come greased with some whitish "waterproof" grease & I'd strongly recommend greasing - plenty enough friction even with grease (remember: cone-clutch-gearboxes are having an oil-bath!)

Re: Quick Antares - Can't get it to manually deploy

I fail to see how the chain gypsy can run free because it and the spindle are slotted. So in my view the only way I could free fall the anchor is if the spindle also ran free. Is the spindle supposed to spin freely?

Re: Quick Antares - Can't get it to manually deploy

So the bottom cone had seezed so well to the anchorchain gypsy that I hd thought they were one and the same item. Only after cleaning it did I notice they were separate parts. Then it took a few taps with a hammer to part the two. Thanks for the tips. I have cleaning and lubricated all the parts and it works perfectly.
