Re: Regalvinizing anchor chain

Paul,

We recently had our chain regalvanized. My advice is to put the money into a new chain.

Re: Regalvinizing anchor chain

This depends on the condition of the old chain and replacement cost. Small gauge chain is probably best replaced. Bigger chain may be worth refinishing. Ours is 7/16 BBB - 320 feet. I haouled it to a guy with an enclosed tumble blaster made for stripping chain. It is an enclosed tower with a conveyor belt in the bottom. The belt is arranged to continuaously tumble the chain while metal blast bead is propelled down into the chain from the tower.

Bare white-metal clean chain was re-plated in a proprietory powder coater. The process is Armor Galvanize ArmorGalv | Michigan Metal Coating - Home Try to locate a licensee in your area. This is the same coating used on chains for the Navy for aircraft tie-down. It is the exceptionally tough coating you see on industrial fasteners that appears a little bit green-gray. It is not soft like hot dip tank galvanizing. Mine was done at Agritek in Holland, Michigan about an hour drive from the boat.

The editor of Three Sheets Northwest seemed to be satisfied with the process in Seattle: Pacific Northwest Boating News: The Passport Project: Part 13 (Bringing an old anchor chain back to life) | Three Sheets Northwest
