Rode splice

Could I do a rope to rope splice to lengthen an anchor rode? It’s for a Fairly light MV, used for day trips with the occasional overnight.

Re: Rode splice

yes, you can - what sort of splice to use would depend on the sort of rope construction. With 3 strand there is a 'long splice' which is strong and not bulky.

You ofc also just tie them with perhaps a double fisherman - would be rather easier . . . be more bulky and weaker but you are likily not ever even near to rope breaking strength.

Re: Rode splice

@marciaanddave: One option would be to put eye splices in the two rodes, and shackle them together when you want to anchor deeper. (Remember to "mouse" the shackle.) This would allow you to use the extra length whenever you wanted, and not bother with it in shallow depths.

Re: Rode splice

Of course you can safely splice your rode! The long splice that Breaking Waves suggested is one choice and a good one, but for a novice the standard "short splice" might be a better choice. IMO, it is easier to accomplish and less likely to be buggered by unskilled practice. The only place where a long splice is really needed is when the rope must pass through a block or other small aperture, and that is not likely in your application.

Any marlinspike manual will have the instructions (if needed) and there are utube type videos galore.

Have at it.

Oh, BTW, back in the days when I used rope rode, I used splices more t han once and had no problems resulting from them.
