Re: Rope rode through gypsy?

Tks Sailorichiban. Interesting idea and very obvious. Not sure why i had not thought of it before. An elegant solution.

Maybe pop the chain off the gypsy and rotate 90 and move one link ahead or behind and put the chain back on the gypsy.
No hacksaw needed.

Re: Rope rode through gypsy?

From Lofrans FAQ ➥ https://www.lofrans.com/faq

Some horizontal anchor windlasses come optionally with a device called "Automatic Free Fall" which allows the clutch to be disengaged automatically by simply pushing on the remote the button Down.

Most Lofrans’ anchor windlasses are able to manage the rope and the chain by a special spring load tension arm called finger which pushes the rope deeply inside the gipsy’s teeth.

I'm not sure if your Lofrans is intended to handle rope on the gypsy or not, but if it has a groove for the rope and your rode fits that groove appropriately, I'd try it and see how it performs.
+1. My Maxwell RC10 gypsy handles rope very well too.

Question: so how do you pay-out the rope rode, if needed? It doesn’t seem to be possible to lift it off the gypsy. And it seems like running it through the gypsy (using the windlass motor) would weaken/wear the rope. Is there a way to disengage the gypsy — get it to spin freely, then just “manhandle” the rope?

Many thx in advance!

Re: Rope rode through gypsy?

Depending on what rope you have (not mentioned) and what type of windlass you have (not mentioned) if necessary change the gypsy to be able to both rope and chain and do a good splice between chain and rope. Plenty of books and U Tube advice on that. Yr windlass would then seamlessly handle both rope & chain.

If you are in the unfortunate situation in which i find myself, the windless manufacturer might not be able to supply a gypsy which can handle both rope & chain. Then you hv two choices:
1) buy a new windlass
2) control the drop or haul of the rope on the capstan by hand but lock it off at the change-over to chain in order to change to /from chain on the gypsy. This is what i do until i maybe get so pissed off with the system after 10 yrs that i go out and execute (1) above.

The gypsy spins in the horizontal plane.
