S&L Anchorman manual windlass clutch engages to much

Hi,

we have been using our manual Simpson and Lawrence anchorman windlass now for over a year on a daily basis and are VERY pleased with it.
We were lucky enough to find a brand new one two years ago with the help of the forum. Amazing, since they have been out of production for many years. Same for the gipsy, we found someone kind enough to swap our 10mm for the 8mm we needed. Thanks to those who made this possible.

I digress, we have one issue with it, and I wonder if someone experienced the same and understands why this happens and how to fix it.

I had it fully apart, cleaned and greased it, and can see no mechanical damage.

The problem is, that when we disengage the clutch by a quarter turn to let out a little more chain in a controller manner, the clutch sometimes goes fully open and we have to turn the handle several times to reangage it. Therefore, much more chain pays out than we want to.

We use the center handle recess to operate the clutch.

Have you put grease in the clutch race?

Drop of oil on the pawls and grease on the axle.
When I turn the drum & gipsy by hand, it does give the proper click click click.

Do you suspect that some grease might hold the pawls back?

It may be, but you say that you have only put oil in the pawls, if you have gone too far with the grease, perhaps something has been able to get where it should not.

Hmmm. Might redo the service than once more... Thanks.
