Seatiger 555 Windlass: Repair Advice Needed

I have a Seatiger 555 Windless and it is jamming up. It was used to get the anchor up in fairly adverse conditions and something happened to it. I have taken the cover plate off and I can see a broken spring, not sure if that is the problem, there are two springs. The windless jams up in one area in rotation. I can order any parts I need, but the problem is, I don't know how to take it apart. Has anyone here ever repaired one of these and possibly tell me how to dismantle it ? Advise would be appreciated because I need it repaired as soon as possible. Thanks

Or contact John McMaster at SL Spares, who can provide dis-assembly instructions:

Gordmay, thank you very much for going through the trouble of finding that information for me. I have dis-assmebled the Seatiger 555 and everything looks fine except for one broken spring. Once I get the part, then I have to put it back together, wish me luck.

I don't think you need luck. You just the need the spring. Heck you got it apart, so you will get it back together.

Gord,

Will you be donating your hard drive to CF after your passing?????

I rebuilt my 555, totally, had to order parts from Scotland, it cost me a quite a bit but it is now in excellent condition... I have a 60lb anchor and 3/8" chain, it brings it in quite well. If you need information on parts etc please let me know. I did have som problems bringing in some of the parts through customs, but worked through it.

I have the same windlass
Did you run into any difficult or quirky aspects to rebuilding yours?

Mine works OK but I think I'd like to open er up to check things out inside for some preventative maintenance.

Any kind of mechanical mechanism is difficult if you know nothing about it like me and this wench. Once I got it apart I realized that it is pretty simple. The diagram of the inner parts looks difficult, but once you take it apart it's fairly easy.

The springs are the weakest link with these and if you take yours apart, I would relace the springs even if they are not broke yet. Once you have it apart, you can examine everything and replace worn out parts but I doubt you will find any parts that are in need of repacing other than the plastic ones.

These are great windlesses and I have no intention of repacing mine with a powered unit as of this time.

I did one of those years ago.

The tech rep recommended I use "Salt water Wheel Bering Grease".
Every hardware store carries it.

I put in too much grease and that jammed a spring...Go easy on the grease.

Re: Seatiger 555 Windlass, repair advice needed

Hi also have a jammed SL 555 Seatiger, opened up the bottom access to find it FULL of yellow / cream sea grease. everything LOOKs fine, but, the cog that drive the main hub's is jammed solid. Used my BIG rubber hammer and Hard wood drift, nothing, the springs look good, the transfer cog rocks, the drive cog rotates... Just the main cog... if I un-hook the springs they look like the devil to get back in..mmmm Has this baby got a internal drum lock. STOP, Ask???

Anyone out there that can help??

Don't believe it does. More likely the gears are jammed or gummed up, locking the unit. PM me with an email address if you need an exploded diagram. It's not easy to get all the parts back the way they came out the first time or two you try it. Take LOTs of digital pics as you disassemble. More than likely your two cogs with the arms aren't sliding freely on their shafts. IMHO, Chris

Re: Seatiger 555 Windlass: Repair Advice Needed

Christian, did PM you,
I downloaded the pdf and the first thing I noticed is part 25 a has NOT got arm on mine. also, Can u confirm that the part No 13 the Ratchet shaft and the other shafts are "push fit" so, they can be knocked out with the right size drift?
I am so reluctant to go pounding, where its stuck, only to find I have busted it. I REALLY want to get this baby working.

Well, I looked everywhere for my PDF with assembly instructions, but I believe a virus destroyed them (along with a lot more) a year or two ago. I remember using nothing more than a mallet and a few screwdrivers to disassemble my 555. Try this website, as the owner was an expert in all things Seatiger: http://test.slspares.co.uk/

BTW, the bushings with arms are called a retrofit kit on this website. Maybe earlier models didn't have arms???

Re: Seatiger 555 Windlass: Repair Advice Needed

Part 13 is just a pin with no taper and it will just push out, at least mine did. All the other's are the same except part 5 and that is tapered. Main Shaft part No 46 is also not taped but only comes out from one side because the shaft has different Dia. They are indeed a bugger to get out.
