Shackles and chain

Time to replace chain and shackles. Previously used Crosby shackles and USA made chain. Local chandler stocks only Chinese chain and says even Crosby makes their shackles in China. Well, I prefer not to buy from China. Are these products still made in USA and are they available in Canada. Thanks.

China. So what, if the QC is well supervised. I've bought some first class American junk. It's about the QC.

As far as I know, Crosby is the gold standard.

Re: Shackles and chain

Crosby shackles generally are made in the USA. There is a lot of counterfeit Crosby out there especially on eBay, even some on Amazon. If the shackle doesn't have Crosby cast in it, it's not.

I got my two ton 3/8" Crosby shackle from a hoisting place online.

Re: Shackles and chain

Defender has them. I’ve sourced some large ones for my mooring on eBay, but you can get them at defenders no problem -

https://www.defender.com/product.jsp...020&id=3291319

Acco is readily available - the problem is shipping weight.

https://www.1st-chainsupply.com/chai...lass_chain.htm seems good, but shipping to Canada is extra.

Well not necessarily, the Chinese are smart at counterfeit and marketing. Real Crosby shackles are made in the USA and will have "Crosby" and "USA" forged in the shackle. Not fully capitalized actually made in the United States.

The Chinese knockoff will have "CROSBY" and "USA" forged in the shackle but its not made in the United States of America, it's "made" in Usa, China. The giveaway is the all caps Crosby.

I work in the oilfield in the Gulf of Mexico on a support vessel so we have to make sure all cargo rigging is legit.

Says who?
Crosby is just another chain manufacturer making chain/shackles to a given standard just like a multitude of other companies do.

This article actually point to China having better quality chain

Quote:
A total of 13 chain samples was tested destructively using a 50 ton Denison tensile tester. The samples included several made in Europe but the majority were from Chinese factories. Four were Grade 40, nine were Grade 30. Every sample achieved the required strength for its grade but it was noticeable that every Chinese Grade 30 chain, with one exception, delivered the strength of a Grade 40. The result suggests that steels used for Grade 40, typical of constructional steels, are more readily obtainable in China than the lower carbon steel used for Grade 30.

You are correct. I was less clear. I have come across ebay listings like that as well. It's why I ordered direct from a rigging shop, after confirming it was legit.

Due diligence as always when buying for one's boat.

I guess it is a trust issue. I don't really trust stuff coming from a country where people put melamine in milk and pet food to raise the protein numbers.

But that's just me.

I try not to buy China unless I can verify quality before hand. Pretty hard with chain.

Must be a pretty dull life you lead seeing most everything comes from or at least partially comes from China.

Take the computer/tablet/phone you are using for this forum, clothes on your back, car that you drive for example.

A. That's me! I hide my accent goodly.

B. I wonder how many companies, world wide, do the same thing. I can think of a few.
