Re: Shockles for mooring lines

One can use a small tyre on the lines--they make an excellent shock absorber, but they drag the lines down a bit. They are cheap though--used tyres are free.

Great suggestion where lack of marine supplies or budget makes it necessary to be creative. If available, Attwood dock li line shock absorbers are a bit more aesthetic. Get the largest size. Mine have lasted many years.

I would not attach any dockline to top of cleat as others have suggested. Stress must be applied to base of cleat. No need for chains on cleat to prevent chafe. I slip dockline through a short length of large diameter reinforced poly water hose then tie into a loop with a bowline. An eye splice would be stronger but I can adjust the size of the loop to just fit over the cleat. I have a 20 year old dockline that protected this way shows no chafe. Ok, ok, yes it should be replaced due to old age, I know.

That's what I use. Small motorbike tires, cheap, easy to come by and last a long time.

And you give them a second use instead of putting them in land fill.

People shouldn't care about aesthetics so much and be more concerned about what works when needed.

Chuck, I want to apologize for helping the thread drift on your thread.

The following is a moderator comment:

The OP asked for specific information about "Shockles", and would still like some. Anybody out there with some more experience, to help this thread get back from its thread drift?

Perhaps old tires are better than shockles.
